Is this true for what the Church teaches in matters of faith and morals? What criteria do you use/suggest that Catholics should use to determine when to stop listening to the Pope and “go to God”? Is this “point” different for different Catholics, and if so, why is this?

Hmmm. Your profile says that you are Catholic. Yet you have a profound misunderstanding of Catholicism. Mortal sin can lead someone to Hell, yes. If you reread Fr. Serpa’s response, he doesn’t actually call it “mortal sin” he calls it “serious sin”. The reason being that grave or serious sin CAN be mortal sin, but three conditions have to be met for a grave/serious sin to be a mortal sin. Check your Catechism. Only the individual committing the sin and God will know whether the grave sin is mortal in their particular instance.

Does the Bible say to attend Mass on Jesus’ birthday? No. Does the Bible say to attend Mass when Mary was immaculately conceived? No. Does God warn the Church that attendant on those days were required for salvation? No. So where did the Pope get the idea that missing Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation was a sin unless he created them.

Do you not know that the Catholic Church does not follow sola scriptura? Why would you be looking in the Bible for the definition of when we should be attending mass?

The Church did teach it was okay to sell them, and to go against Church teaching and condemn the selling of indulgences is rebelling against the Church. And what I’ve been told, disobedience against the Church is a mortal sin. So being against indulgences is a grievance sin.

Do you know what indulgences are? They still exist today. Re-read your own links. The Church did NOT teach that it was okay to SELL indulgences. The Church did promote that almsgiving is a charitable act that can earn an indulgence. It was in the corrupt implementation of this that it became indulgences for SALE.

All Protestants ignore the teachings of the Catholic Church. This doesn’t mean they are going to Hell. Are you including them or just Catholics? If a Catholic leaves the Church, and he comes a Methodist, that doesn’t mean he is defying Christ. He just chose to worship him in a different manner.

I most certainly do not think that all Protestants go to Hell;for that matter, I am pretty sure that not all Catholics do either. Any person who deliberately and knowlegebly commits mortal sin is choosing damnation, be they Proetstant or Catholic. What I in my previous post was that those who are aware that the Catholic Church teaches the truth, but choose to ignore Her anyway, are choosing Hell. This is really just a specific insatnce of mortal sin. You cannot maliciously turn from a truth that you do not know exists; you may turn from it ignorantly, but not maliciously. That being said, all persons have the responsibility to seek truth so that they will no longer be ignorant. Once one recognizes the truth, one must accept the truth or choose damnation. Sounds harsh, but I think it is true…To reject the truth is to reject Christ…and the person who rejects Christ can ever enter Heaven…and if you are not in Heaven, the only other place you can spend eternity is in Hell.

Is it true that the Popes have anathematised people who use the word homoiousios instead of homoousios. And isn’t being subject to an anathema the same as being excommunicated from the Catholic Church and therefore denied salvation?
