Editorial by John-Henry WestenVATICAN CITY, December 23, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In thousands of news articles and talk shows around the world today from Bulgaria to India, Pope Benedict XVI is being bashed for daring to say we should care as much for mankind as the tropical rainforests; that…

While I disagree with some of his arguments, I favor the overall purpose of his admonition. We’ve become entirely overly sexualized, to the extent of succumbing to outright debauchery as a society. We must rein ourselves in, regain control over our impulses and the issue of sex, in general, and thereby restore some degree of dignity to it and to ourselves. Presently, unrestrained sexual desire controls us, and leads us toward self-destruction, more boldly every day.

Don’t overgeneralize & speak for yourself by saying “it controls ME”, not “US”.
Not all people have a problem with it or are controlled by this.

I know I am going to get slammed for saying this, but I must speak my mind. I found the Popes statements to be extemely troubling. Consider the following story…

A proffesor of mine, who is gay, has a older brother, who his also gay. His older brother came out of the closet a few years before he did. And upon learning that, his brother, her eldest son was gay, his mother loaded a pistol and decided she was going to kill him (fortunately my proffesor, her younger son, was able to talk her out of it).

Just the other day I was surfing a website and found this comment, “The only thing gay people have the right to choose is between the noose and the bullet.”

My biggest concern is that people like this, who may not understand the concept of love the sinner hate the sin, and have negative feeling toward homosexuals, will point at these statements by the Pope and say to other people, “Look! See, the infallible Pope agrees with me! And you should to”

The Church clearly teaches that these are terrible things. The Pope’s statement certainly doesn’t support the mother’s action or the noose/bullet quote you found.

I’m not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you saying you agree with what the Pope said, but you are afraid of what some people will do in response? Or, are you saying you disagree with what the Pope said and you’re concerned about the response?

Personally, I don’t believe the Pope should refrain from speaking because some people will misinterpret what he says. 🤷

We, all of us, are here to make sure that when people use the words of the Church to defend their hateful acts, that those people get corrected.

I guess the Pope should have just kept his mouth shut then, huh?

No, just chosen his words more carefully. There are a lot of people out there who, like I said, are not as able to distinguish between the sinner and the sin. Try having some empathy, just imagine if you were one of the many gay teenagers and you were struggling and feeling alone and confused about your same sex attraction, and one day you here the, as one person put it, “moral authority on this earth,” had declared to the world “we need to save the world from homosexuality.” Just imagine how that would feel.

People who deal with “self-destructive sexual lifestyles” are often times just that, self-destructive. And people are not drawn to self destruction because they are wicked, but because they are feeling empty and lost. They are seeking acceptance and may confuse sex with love and validation. They need compassion, not condemnation.

Your position only emboldens gays and the gay agenda. I side with the Pope. As much as I hate it, it would prefer to lose some, than society as a whole. I cannot tolerate the minorities, of any type, to dictate and control and/or provide the guidence for the majority.

Careful words are nothing more than political correctness, and that is what got us here in the first place.
