Coffee was not always as popular as it is today. In fact, its fame in the Western Hemisphere began only in the 16th century, largely thanks to Pope Clement VIII.

Of course, coffee didn’t suddenly appear in the late 1500s. Our beloved brew has been around at least since the 9th century when, as explained by Sam Guzman in his note for The Catholic Gentleman, Arab shepherds “first noticed coffee beans had a particularly stimulating effect on their sheep…
