Brother Guy Consolmagno has an asteroid named after him. The planetary scientist for the Vatican talks to Justin Brierley about his journey of faith, his scientific research and answers questions from listeners on the interaction of science and Christianity. Did the church persecute Galileo? Could there be extra-terrestrial life? Is the new Pope pro-science?

One remarkable comment Brother Guy made, with regard to how atheists can look at the wonder of creation and still come up with an atheistic explanation, was: “God always gives us the option of plausible deniability. ‘If you don’t want to believe in Me, that’s ok. But if you do, we’re going to have a great time’ …”

This was a terrific interview. I had been somewhat prejudiced against Br Consolmagno because of some outlandish-sounding quotes that had been attributed to him. But my opinion now is that he is a somewhat nerdy guy who speaks somewhat impulsively but when you hear the context of his comments they are not controversial, but much of what he says I found inspiring. And the British interviewer is also terrific. Definitely worth a listen!

I’ve seen some clips of him on the Internet, one of which was a video of a lecture he gave. I think he has an awesome approach to his faith and to his scientific studies, and a wonderful way of combining both. A very interesting guy. (pun intended)

Thank you so much for this link - I’ve just spent a happy hour totally fascinated by this man.
