Preachers like Joel Osteen, Bo Sanchez, etc have been triving on the health and wealth gospel.
But this is contrary to the Catholic doctrine on suffering. The catholic view on suffering is the most beautiful but the most misunderstood doctrine of our church. It will never sell because people don’t like the concept of suffering. That’s why many refuse the doctrine of purgatory.
Try preaching the properity gospel to the Etihopians. “Come on, kids…you don’t have to suffer and be malnourished, all you have to do is have faith!” That’s PERVERSE. As according to Dr. Scott Hahn.
Mother Theresa will certainly not agree with this prosperity gospel as she have said that sufferings are the tender caresses of God. Point to me one saint that didn’t suffer and I will give it to you. You know what? you can’t.
Jesus said that you have to take up your cross daily. You have to suffer and die with Him in order to ressurect with Him. Jesus even said to the two disciples who wanted to sit at his side in the kingdom of God… “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”
Do you see how Jesus associated baptism with suffering?
We all need to suffer with Jesus in order to be one with Him.
