The raising of the monstrance during benediction

I raised this once before, but did not receive any response. During Benediction, the Priest uses his bare hands to mount The Eucharist into the monstrance. When it comes to raising the monstrance at the climax of the Benediction service, he shrouds himself. I believe it is partly reverence but I am sure that there is a deeper meaning. Anyone?

As a layman I place a host in the luna with my bare hands well before Mass begins. I think place the luna and host in a ciborium which eventually gets placed on the altar. During distribution of Holy Communion I (as an altar server) place the luna inside of the monstance which I have placed on the corporal. There is nothing wrong with any of that.

During the procession and during Benediction the priest does grasp the monstrance thought either a cope or a hummeral veil. He certainly wouldn’t be committing any sin if he used neither but it is a custom.

At the beginning and closing of a period of exposition and adoration of the Holy Eucharist, the Priest would use his bare hands to put the luna (container with the Host) into the monstrance.

At benediction, or the blessing at the end of a period of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the Priest will “shroud” himself, or use a vestment called a humeral veil. He does this for a very significant reason. As the Priest lifts the monstrance and uses it to make the sign of the Cross, he is performing “benediction”, or giving a blessing. You will notice that the Priest will have his hands covered by the humeral veil as he moves the monstrance. This signifies that it is not the Priest who is giving the blessing, but Jesus Christ Himself, who is exposed and present in the Holy Eucharist.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. I am certainly not saying that the priest is committing a sin or anything to that effect. I am just trying to understand if there is more to it. The Catholic faith is steeped in wonderful traditions and I just want to appreciate it to the fullest. God bless.

Laymen are forbidden to touch the Host except EM’s; only Deacon or higher is allowed. Sounds like your priest is victim of the 1970’s-1980’s weak Catechumite following Vatican II. You should ask the Bishop if your Priest is following the Norms. The Priesrt has Apostolic Powers laymen do Not Have; he commits no ‘sin’ unless he Violates serious liturgical norms.

in above # 5, I meant ask your Bishop if Your Priest is abiding by The Norms in allowing non-EM’s to touch or handle the Holy Eucharist. The Priest is obliged to follow the Known, Published Norms (Rules), as Everry person is. Live in Jesus.
