I can’t find a thread on these forums later than 2007 and all of the links are dead by now but:

What are the Catholic views on the rapture? I know Catholics do not believe in the rapture but what turns them off? Do we not believe that Jesus will return that is stated quite bluntly in the bible? Do we not believe in the end times which are inevitable? Surely we’re not debating that the end times will never happen, the human race WILL eventually die out. I personally believe it’s hogwash that the end times are near however, we’re going to be around for at least several thousand more years.

One topic that I read from 2007 said that the rapture was only in one verse of the bible and I’m quite confused on this issue.

Sorry I’m new to Catholicism.

Sorry I’m new to Catholicism.
Further, no need to apologize. That’s what the forum’s for. Even those of us who have been around for years still have questions, as you can see. We can study an entire lifetime and still never know it all!

Welcome! 🙂

Thank you very much again ClearWater that explains alot on Catholic views for the rapture.
My pleasure!

I read the Bible, cover to cover, and I’m on it now for a second time. Catholic Bibles have footnotes on the bottom to help us with interpretation. I have learned to begin to use those, as well.

Oh I’m not that devout of a Catholic or christian yet, I haven’t finished the bible I will finish it one of these days.

Question though. If Catholics believe that Jesus never really left the earth and that his 1,000 year reign is in progress wouldn’t that mean that the end times should have happened by now?

He died 2,000 some odd years ago. Or is this going to happen in the future or has started happening within the last thousand years at the start of his second coming? The article wasn’t clear.

The article is a bit difficult to grasp unless you already had some background in understanding terminology like “millennialism.” This is an issue I have been looking at for many years and depending on if you are a catholic or an evangelical protestent you will see it completely different. Nelson Darby, an Irish preacher, introduced the idea of a pre-tribulation rapture only 150 years ago or so. The idea of the rapture was not part of the catholic lexicon until recently as this new agey version of the rapture that has been sensationalized by the “left behind” series has now opened us to it as a concept.

The only reason most are interested in the rapture now is that they believe they will be taken up to heaven before the tribulation.

You can understand the new age protestant idea of the rapture which is really driving this conversation by watching a video by David Jeremiah. He believes and teaches in the third coming of Jesus. Try not to drink anything while watching his videos though you might spit your coffee over your computer screen… I almost died laughing when I heard this the first time from him.

I don’t know if this is the specific youtube video I watched but it will get you in the right place.

Also, there is a pretty good and easy book to read written by a catholic on the subject “will catholics be left behind” by Carl E. Olson. He explains all the different scenarios.

Best of luck!

I don’t believe in the Rapture, don’t believe it’s biblical, it’s just a false interpretation based
on only one or two verses AND FEAR. Many Christians are too scared to believe that they
will be included in the Great Tribulation. “Oh no, God wouldn’t let that happen to US,” think
the Rapturists, but that’s exactly what will happen to those who are truly Christian, we are
all screwed essentially. The End is coming, it’s coming for us, and we can’t weasel our way
out of what we must endure for the Glory of God.

Let’s get our noses out of the Left Behind series and get back to the Bible. The Bible says that
we Christians will suffer greatly on the Earth. God isn’t going to make the Faith easy, but hard,
bitter, even scary, like with those Christians of old thrown to the lions. What? Is there anybody
here who thinks he or she is more special than those Christians of old? that God will spare the
BEST of Christians and leave doomsday for the worst?

QUITE THE CONTRARY, the order is reversed, as the BEST of Christians, I believe, are the ones
who are going to suffer, probably the most even, because the worst of us will put aside the Faith
and live more fortunately during the End of Days, while the REAL Christians will ENDURE to the
very End, through pain and suffering, sickness and other disadvantages.

There will be no comfort and luxury during the Tribulation for the Faithful.

THE RAPTURE IS A
MYYYTH-TH-TH-TH!

There is going to be a rapture but it is a myth with respect to how it is framed now by the tithe collectors.

The rapture as it is now part of our mainstream types like David Jeremiah that started with the likes of Hal Lindsey ties into this whole neo-conservative, militaristic, “end times prophecy.” For those who are not as firm in their understanding of Catholicism though it is not enough to leave them with no answer so I would suggest in my humble opinion that those who are curious why this is so mainstream start with the like of the aforementioned folks so they can see it for what it is, a farce meant to aid in their deception against the Church and Truth.

Having family and been in that world of evangelicals for many years but always a catholic at heart and now returned to Catholicism that this is no joke to those who believe in it, and if you were to try to tell them it is not true they will look at you cross eyed.

The most ironic thing about the evangelical, fundamentalists is they believe because they see themselves as “bible believing” Christians they have cornered the market on interpreting the bible. I would put my Papa Benedict up against any one of them any day, my beloved Pope Emeritus, marketing verses truth is not built on a solid foundation!

Interestingly catholics do believe in the end times, and that the church will go thru a period when christians in general will be jailed, tortured and killed for their beliefs, masses will be held in secret, for fear of persecution. These times will also include the mark of the beast, and if people do not accept this mark, they will not be able to earn money, buy or sell anything, etc, so life will be extremely hard for them, BUT, if they accept this mark, this is denying their faith, so they are damned to hell,

but the rapture is said to come before this, so the truly devout and faithful do not have to endure this terrible time, however Im assuming the catholics argue that everyone must go thru this and not be swept away by God.
