I read Columbus’ diary. A couple of things I remember, stood out. When Columbus and crew rowed ashore on the first island they encountered, they found a village on the beach which was (temporarily) deserted. It seems the natives fled into the forest when they saw the Europeans.I looked it up and read an account. It was horrible, if it’s all true. I have no reason to doubt at least until I do further research. Thanks for the heads-up! Also, I’m not sure of the definition of genocide…
The crew poked around the village, going inside the huts and checking everything out. They found a fire going, over which there was a vessel containing a meal of some kind of soup. Being curious, they stirred the pot and pulled up a piece of meat, and to their horror, they discovered it was a human neck.
So this was their first impression of the natives, and you know what they say about first impressions…
Eventually Columbus sailed back to Spain and left about 40 men in a fort they had constructed. When Columbus returned, he found them all massacred. I’m sure this set the tone for the kind of relationship the Europeans had with the natives.
