As a kid growing up in the JW’s my parents were very charitable. We sometimes had whole families living with us for up to a year. But as far as $ to outside charities, it just didn’t happen.

When I was a JW living in Florida, I lived near a large facility where the District Conventions were held (a once year gathering for several thousand witnesses - held over a weekend - speakers, singing, dramas - TONS of fun) Anyhow, I would often get asked to house a family or two who had to travel to the convention but couldn’t afford a hotel. Never thought twice. Others from my hall did this as well. So JW’s are very charitable - but I think it’s mostly limited to other witnesses because - at least in my mind, my main “charity” to non-witnesses was the door to door work.
I would have never dropped a dime in a bucket for Christmas toys. I believed Christmas was wrong… I would not have supported it - even for children.

You are correct. In my limited (18 months) of association with them, I was told directly (by my book “study” pal) that to donate to anyone or any charity outside of the wt was to give to “Satan’s system of things”
I still gave to street people who asked but never told my witness “friends” whom I knew would disapprove. That secrecy was just a small part of my eye opening to the wrongness of the whole wt experience.
