“If God created everything, then he must have created evil. Why?”

This is a question that used to burn on my mind and I am sure it burns on the minds of others. When I found the following story, I nearly jumped out of my seat. If you are searching for the answer to this difficult question, I think this story should suffice.

The university professor challenged his students with this question. “Did God create everything that exists?” A student bravely replied, “Yes, he did!”

“God created everything?” The professor asked.

“Yes sir”, the student replied.

The professor answered, “If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are then God is evil.” The student became quiet before such an answer. The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, “Can I ask you a question professor?”

“Of course”, replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, “Professor, does cold exist?”

“What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?” The students snickered at the young man’s question.

The young man replied, “In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat.”

The student continued, “Professor, does darkness exist?”

The professor responded, “Of course it does.”

The student replied, “Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton’s prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn’t this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present.”

Finally the young man asked the professor, “Sir, does evil exist?”

Now uncertain, the professor responded, “Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.”

To this the student replied, “Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith or love that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”

The professor sat down.

The young man’s name — Albert Einstein.

Very interesting.

That sort of struck a chord with something I saw recently on a rerun of the TV series Angel. I’m not an afficiando (sp?), but this episode was interesting, and the punch line was a killer.

I don’t know a lot about the series, but it apparently takes place in an alternate universe where there are vampires and demons, the latter of which come from another dimension and can act in our dimension. Some of them co-exist with humans. Angel is a vampire who is battling evil. And there is this giant corporation (Wolfram and Hart, or something like that) which is the outlet for all the evil that is going on in the world.

In this particular episode Angel gets a ring that gives him the power to be taken to the home office of all the evil that is being done. At the end of the episode he is standing outside that corporation’s headquarters (I think); he makes the appropriate incantation, and an elevator door opens up on the outside of the building. There is a business-dressed man inside who says he will take him; Angel gets into the elevator and looks out on a normal city street scene for what he thinks will be the last time. The door closes, and the elevator goes down…and down…and down…(you get the picture), while Angel and this normal-looking man have a loooong conversation.

Finally, the elevator stops, and the door opens–and it’s the same street scene that they had left. The businessman says words to the effect that this is the home office, because as long as there is this much demand for evil…(again, you get the picture).

That’s a wierd little series that I ordinarily don’t pay much attention to, but that sequence made me sit up and take notice.

That is a nice story, but most likely an urban legend.

The real reason we have evil in the world is simple: Free Will

God gave us the ability to choose to love Him, or choose to not love Him. It was through the first sin of Adam and Eve that evil entered into the world, and it was their free choice. Before the Fall there was no death, no suffering, no pain, not even childbirth! God does not want unthinking automatons, doing His will because they have to. He wants us to love Him because we choose to love Him, and we ourselves welcomed (and continue to wecome) evil into the world. It is this which makes the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross critical for our salvation.

Good analogy. It parallells the definition of evil. Evil is that which lacks good. Like cold is that which lacks heat. It dissolves the age old thought that good requires evil to exist. As if one could not fulfill ones purpose unless it were threatened.

I quite agree with MamaGeek’s post.

God gave us free will in this life. It is us abusing this free will that brings evil in this world. The basic example is the free will given to Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. They had a choice whether to take from the tree of knowledge or not, even though God instructed them not to, but eventually they did.

Evil was created by mankind, and so-called “advertised” or “spread” in many subtle means by Satan. The best way to stop evil is to spread goodness. Then, there would be no absence of light whatsoever wherever we go. =)

Thanks for your support of my post, but I wanted to reiterate the most important part, which is that only through Jesus Christ can evil be irradicated. We can do our best to spread goodness, but due to our basic sinful nature, there will still be an “absence of light.” Only Jesus is the “light of the world.”
