Why does the Bible say rich people go to hell. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

What if someone is rich, enjoys their money, but also seeks out to continually give money out to the poor and other charities or fundraisers?

Well what the bible is really trying to say is, don’t be greedy.
If your willing to kill your money for a good cause I don’t see anything sinful about that.

Exactly. Jesus is teaching us that to store up stuff here on earth is pretty pointless. I think it always is worth reflecting on necessary wealth. Some of us are blessed and in Matthew 26:11 Jesus reminds us there will always be poor people no matter what we do, still, I think there’s a point where wealth becomes obscene!

Here’s a better question… Why do so many misquote the Bible. Please point out where the Bible says that rich people go to hell. Please don’t use Mt 19:24 because Jesus simply said it was easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the gates of Heaven. The money isn’t the problem. Money is NOT the root of all evil as some like to misquote. It’s the LOVE OF MONEY that is the problem.

Umm, it doesn’t. Not at all. It DOES say that it’s hard for rich people to get to heaven - but then it say’s it’s hard for EVERYONE to get to heaven, so the rich aren’t singled out there.

And then it goes on to say that for man nothing is possible but for God all things are possible!

What about the story of the rich man going to Jesus and asking how can he get into heaven. Jesus told him the only way to get to heaven was to give up all of you wealth and material belongings and then you’ll have it all in heaven.

Is that not a direct commandment from God that we have to give up everything to the poor?

Inwardly (spiritually). It is not a commandment to literally give away all of one’s material possessions.

Here’s the actual quote from St. Matthew Ch. 19.
16 And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting? 17 Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness. 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 20 The young man saith to him: All these I have kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me?
21 Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me. 22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. 25 And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: Who then can be saved?
26 And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible
Jesus says that “enter into life” (achieve salvation) you need to follow the commandments.

To “be perfect” give away all your possessions.

Clearly a Mother Theresa or a St. Francis is more “perfect” that you average Catholic, but it does not mean that everyone needs to adopt a life a poverty to be saved.

In fact, everyone CAN NOT adopt a life of poverty. If there was no one working, producing wealth, who would support the charities?

Hope this helps you.

God Bless

in the quoted passage he was speaking to one man, who went beyond the prescription to keep the commandments binding on everyone, and issue a call to that one man, as he had called the other apostles, but the man turned Jesus down, and went away sad, why? because “he had many possessions”. possessions which brought him no joy or satisfaction now that he had encountered but rejected Christ. No word anywhere in that passage on this man’s eternal fate.
