I’ve discovered some liturgical books recently called the Rites of the Catholic Church, and I have some questions about them. Are these any official books that are used in the Liturgy? And are they still used? Would these have the rite used for Confirmation if I wanted to refer to that?

If you’re talking about the 2-volume set with orange covers, I have those too, and always understood that those are study / reference editions and not the fancier hard-covered volumes actually used in liturgy. That’s how I use them. Have never seen the orange covered volumes used in church.

These books contain more than one rite; it would be extremely unwieldy for a priest to use one of these two books while, for example, baptizing a person or marrying a couple. Individual ritual books are what priests use in practice.

Also, it might be worthwhile to mention that these volumes reflect the rites in use at the time of publication; the texts of the rites can change. (For example, it’s my understanding that the Rite of Marriage is due for an update in the next year or two; at that time, priests will have to buy a new ritual book, whereas (I don’t think that) the ‘Rites’ volumes will undergo a new revision.)

They tell you how it’s supposed to go. They are not used DURING any liturgy.
When Father baptizes, he has a decorative binder that he uses during the Baptism with the prayers printed out inside.
Same with the other Sacraments.

Well, they wouldn’t use the books the OP is mentioning but in my parish the priests use the official Ritual books for Baptism, Marriage, Funeral (Vigil, Funeral liturgy) etc. No binders if there is a Ritual in the sacristy.

He uses Binders for some of the bi-lingual liturgies that are provided by the Archdiocese. We also have the Ritual books.

OK, no bilingual liturgies in our parish. AFAIK, Fr. only speaks English.
😃
yeah, it’s hard to juggle a couple of books. One of the Deacons in the Archdiocese publishes them, and provides them through the Chancery.
Nice to have those options in an easy to flip back and forth format. 🙂
