Cardinal Re at Fatima: Absence of God Is Cause of Crisis
…Celebrating Mass in Fatima for the Oct. 13 feast day, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re said the root of the crises in today’s world, both economic and moral, is the “absence of God.”
The retired prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, said that faith is something essential that cannot be marginalized or considered irrelevant, “because it changes radically the way of thinking and acting.” And it is not only about eternal salvation, but about something fundamental for “a serene life on this earth.”
“Without God, man and woman no longer have principles that illumine the path of life,” continued the Cardinal, asserting that “when God loses the central place due to Him, man also loses his place.”
This is because “far from God, the human being loses himself and is at the mercy of personal egoisms and group interests.”
Focused on the problem of the lack of faith, Carinal Re recalled that the Gospel of the day took him in thought to the Temple of Jerusalem, which Christ found changed into a “den of thieves and merchants.”
In pointing out this reading, the cardinal requested the pilgrims to ask themselves about “the place that God has in our hearts and in our lives,” warning of the danger when “God becomes the last of our concerns.”
He asserted that the Fatima apparitions continue transmitting a message of holiness and an invitation to change one’s life.
The above was taken from Zenit October 14, 2015, and may seem obvious to most of us, yet it is good to hear anyone in the Church proclaiming the Truth that our culture needs God so much and not only is ignoring Him but doing grave harm to brothers and sisters because of “personal egoisms and group interests”. May the Pope and Bishops meeting in Rome, recognize the urgency of helping families to see their unique vocation in God’s plan. For centuries the Faith has been passed down from generation to generation, but today … many of us are seeing what Cardinal Re sees and is speaking about: God is becoming more and more the last of family concerns. How many families even Catholic ones today have even heard of the Fatima apparitions? I wonder.

It took 40 years of false preaching by radicals and the media that claimed a lie: This - our way - is the way the world should be. The Body of Christ was slowly poisoned.

By replacing music about love and devotion with violence, disrespect for women or anyone else. By replacing movies without offensive words or sexual situations or scandal, we now have those movies. The same on TV. No-Fault Divorce made it easier to tear families apart. “Casual sex” has led to a loss of real, true relationships, and an epidemic of STDs in the US. Pope Benedict warned of “radical individualism.”

If we are not given this knowledge, we fail. An hour in Church a week is not enough. We need to reject portrayals of immoral and indecent behaviors and live as Christians 7 days a week. I can’t buy many books or magazines today because they are offensive and present offensive things as if we are to accept them. Please, don’t accept them.

Imitate Christ and keep His commandments, even though we fall. Get up, confess your sins and move on. Jesus came to give us life more abundantly. If we follow and do what He said, our lives will be better than what the world tells us and shows us as “normal” or “average” behavior.

Do not be fooled. “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 NIV

The fact that people in general are flooded with impure movies, tv shows and music that is very suggestive the effects of the sexual revolution as predicated to happen by Our Lady of Good Success.

These evils must be combated against and soicety must no longer show false compassion to homosexuals or single parents but must strongly hold them accountable for their sins.

By reminding them of the need for conversion and urging them to go to confession then we can rebuild this lost society.

Have hope. God always leaves a faithful remnant.

Dear Ed and Trad,

Thank you both for your replies. All you’ve shared in your posts has been leading the world to the crisis – as Cardinal Re has seen and pointed to at Fatima. At the root of it is the willingness to accept the absence of God. Some years back Pope Benedict XVI termed it “practical atheism”. People may call themselves “Christian” or “Catholic” or as is fashionable to say in some circles “I’m spiritual but not religious” ---- but in practice they all live without God; He is truly absent in their lives.

The first letter of Peter is very significant for us today. St. Peter realized he denied Christ and wept bitterly. When He returned to God he repented and began by God’s Grace to strengthen his brethren. 1 Peter 5 is a great chapter! Allow me to quote a bit more:
…So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you. Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little. To him be dominion forever. Amen. (1 Peter 5: 6 - 11)
