This is a small booklet I ordered awhile ago, arrived last Saturday. Written by Susan Tassone. It is a simple guideline to reciting the Dominican Rosary daily with the purpose of helping The Church Suffering. I cannot explain it rationally, but I feel a deep need to devote myself to that task.

I tried it tonight. (Monday = Joyful Mysteries) One item is an extra sentence added on to the end of the Fatima prayer…

“And console the souls in purgatory, particularly those most abandoned.”

Each of the 200 Hail Mary’s have a short sentence from the scriptures to help focus the mind. She includes some optional prayers. I chose to use the "Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary before the start of the actual Rosary.

Intention 1 was for my RCIA class, that we could grow together in spirituality. The other 4 decades were for the souls in Purgatory. I preceeded them with 4 paragraphs from the book, paragraphs of prayers to Mary on behalf of the suffering souls.

All this increased the time it took for me to recite the rosary from 30 minutes to 40 minutes, but it just seemed so right. Of course, I am not in a State of Grace, just an RCIA Candidate. And I am not sure if my RCIA class even considers me to be a Christian. It doesn’t matter. It just felt right.

Remember that in situations where confession is not available (RCIA being one of them), a sincere Act of Perfect Contrition (google to find one) can immediately bring you into - well, a state sufficient to bring forgiveness of sins and permit you to go to heaven or purgatory in the event of death, though not to receive the Eucharist.

I should imagine you would then be in a fit state to pray for the souls in purgatory … after all, if you were to die you’d be one of them!

If I do escape the fires of hell, I will be in purgatory a very long time due to my Act Of Charity. And souls in purgatory cannot help themselves. The help must come from outside.

Sounds like a really great little book.

Last summer I went on a trip to visit my wife’s relatives. Before the trip, I had become increasingly interested in purgatory and was finding out about praying for souls in purgatory. The Catholic Church nearest my sister-in-law’s where we stayed had a saying of the rosary each night at 7:45 PM. It was only a short walk away so I went each night. And a really nice gentleman named John met me each night. I went nearly every night for about two weeks and John had more information about praying for souls in purgatory and St. Philomena.

Since the trip I have continued to be encouraged to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

There are other things we can do as well for the Holy Souls. We can offer up our daily inconveniences, our physical pains, etc. And we can earn indulgences for them. Even partial indulgences help them so much and they are very grateful and in turn pray for us.

Praying the Rosary for the Holy Souls is great. So is visiting the Holy Eucharist in adoration or walking the “Stations of the Cross” and praying.

But I really wanted to not tell you about all of the wonderful treasures that are available. Instead, it is more exciting for you to find out these things by yourself. And to take your time and really enjoy each individual discovery. However, Andruschak, there is so much that I cannot possibly spoil anything. It is just like the Gospel of John says: John 21:25 “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.”

And the Church has so many treasures, I probably am still totally ignorant of the vast majority of blessings and treasures.

The “Heroic Act” (deciding to forego all indulgences or prayers in favor of Holy Souls in Purgatory) is thought by some to result in a very brief stay in purgatory (if any stay at all).

Andruschak, I think you are really on the right track. You’re sober, in RCIA, praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Mary loves you an awful lot and I think she is working big time in your life.

Don’t let anybody discourage you. I think there are an awful lot of people who do not even think about Purgatory at all (or who consider that it does not exist). Even those who consider themselves Catholic.

Please remember me in prayer as well.

I separately responded to you that I keep my Rosary intentions at the start or at the end of my praying the Rosary. Well sometimes something comes up as an intention that cannot be ignored or forgotten. Such as the shooting of innocent Amish schoolgirls in Pennsylvania yesterday. When thoughts like that (or any other urgent need) interrupt my praying the Rosary I do break away from the Rosary momentarily and just continue in freely spoken prayers. Then return to the Rosary where I left off.

I know I must sound like a broken record but another way to help souls in purgatory (as well as yourselves) is to join FOSS. Its a wonderful way to help the souls and the benefits are amazing.

Please consider joining, its costs absolutely nothing except for a stipend once a year. You can also nominate family members (in my case most of them are lazy catholics) and have masses said on their behalf, the suffering souls pray fervently for them.

No sincere prayer for the Church Suffering would be without great effect, you goose, whether made by a long-in-the-tooth cradle Catholic like me or a soon-to-be member of our glorious Church like you. 👍

And you can be sure that those souls in purgatory that your prayers are helping are praying for you too.

Thank you, and i hope so,

You might also want to include the Litany for the Holy Souls in Purgatory found here

I read it, but still could find nothing about weather a non-catholic like me is wasting his breath in prayers for the Church Suffering that have no effect.
One of my sisters has committed to the Heroic Act. It is a very unselfish thing to do, to award all your graces and indulgences to the Holy Souls. I admire you both for your courage.

You must have been called to it. It is not for everyone; it is a very selfless thing to do, and the fact that you have made this commitment prior to even being a Catholic must mean that God really has His hand on you.

I’ve been wondering about that myself. A lot of strange “coincidences” have led me here.

.
I wouldn’t bet on that. Two reasons:

Mother Mary can tell when someone is sincere, and someone is just grandstanding. Even loving Mothers spank naughty children

Mother Mary knows why I need to spend a long time in Purgatory, and I would not feel comfortable useing those “get out of purgatory free” indulgences
