I know the Rosary is mainly a meditative prayer on scripture. I do have one hickup with it though. The first part of the Hail Mary is from the book of Luke. Can I get a answer on the second partition and where it comes from.

Thanks and God Bless
CW:gopray:

The second part, “holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death”

Catholic doctrines don’t originate from scripture and prayers don’t have to come from scripture. The Church learned everything directly from Jesus. See my post on "why does any Catholic teaching have to be in the bible."

Thus, the second part of the prayer is in accordance with the teachings that the prayers of righteous people are extremely valuable and that those in heaven can hear our prayers.

There is some history on the “Hail Mary” prayer in the Catholic Encyclopedia, here.

My :twocents: …
That the righteous dead do pray for the living can be deduced from 2 Maccabees 15:12. That the living may address the dead in prayer can be deduced from Daniel 3:86.

Holy Mary: Mary has been called “the holy virgin” since at least the time of St. Hippolytus (d. about A.D. 236), here, here, and here.

Mary, mother of God: Mary was called “the mother of my Lord” by Elizabeth in Luke 1:43. Mary has been called “the mother of God” since at least the Council of Ephesus (A.D. 431)

Pray for us: Colossians 4:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:25; 2 Thessalonians 3:1; Hebrews 13:18.

Us sinners: See 1 Timothy 1:15.

*Now and at the hour of our death, *i.e. “today” and at “the end”: See Hebrews 3:13-14.

According to wiki the second half was added around the time of the council of Trent c. 1500s.

"…The “Catechism of the Council of Trent” says that to the first part of the Hail Mary, by which “we render to God the highest praise and return Him most gracious thanks, because He has bestowed all His heavenly gifts on the most holy Virgin…the Church of God has wisely added prayers and an invocation addressed to the most holy Mother of God … we should earnestly implore her help and assistance; for that she possesses exalted merits with God, and that she is most desirous to assist us by her prayers, no one can doubt without impiety and wickedness.”

Holy Mary

Mary is blessed among women, all generations shall call her blessed, and she was chosen to give birth to God made flesh - so she must be holy

Mother of God

St Elisabeth calls her “the mother of my Lord” - the Greek word is used in the NT to refer both to God the Father and God the Son. Mary gave birth to God the Son, making her his Mother.

Pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death, Amen

We are sinners so we aks Mary to pray for us to God. While St Paul tells us that there is one mediator, a few verses beforehand he tells us to interceede. Catholics of course believe that the saints in heaven can pray/interceede for us, they are alive in heaven and not oblivious to what goes on on earth.

The Rosary and Sacred Scripture

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.

Luke 1:28 "And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” The Greek kecharitomene means favored by grace, graced. Its tense suggests a permanent state of being “highly favored,” thus full of grace. Charity, the divine love within us, comes from the same root. God is infinite Goodness, infinite Love. Mary is perfect created goodness, filled to the limit of her finite being with grace or charity.

Blessed art thou among women

Luke 1:41- "When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women…”

Luke 1:48 “For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.”

Among all women is a way to say the highest/greatest etc. of a group in Semitic languages (these words would likely have been spoken in Aramaic). Mary is being called the greatest of all women, greater than Ruth, greater than Sarah, greater than EVE! Since Eve was created immaculate (without original sin), Mary must have been conceived immaculate. And, although Eve fell into sin by her own free will, Mary must have corresponded to God’s grace and remained sinless. She could not otherwise be greater than Eve. Thus, as the Fathers of the Church unanimously assert, Mary is the New Eve who restores womanhood to God’s original intention and cooperates with the New Adam, her Son, for the Redemption of the world.

Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus

Luke 1:42 “and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

Jesus is Mary’s fruit. Good fruit does not come from anything but a good tree (Mt. 7:17-18)! The all-holy Son of God could not be the fruit of any other tree than the Immaculate Virgin.

Holy Mary, Mother of God

Luke 1:43 "And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

Kyrios is the Greek word used by the Jews in the Septuagint Bible (Greek translation) for Yhwh, the Divine Name of God. In her greeting of Mary, Elizabeth is saying: “How is it that the mother of my God should come to me.” Against the heresies of the 4th and 5th centuries which tried to split the Person of Jesus into two, divine and human, denying one or the other, the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD proclaimed Mary Theotokos (God-bearer, i.e. mother of God). Jesus is a single Person, a Divine Person, the 2nd Person of the Most Holy Trinity. To be mother of the Person Jesus is to be mother of a Person who is God. Mary’s title protects this truth against errors which emphasize or deny, either the divinity or humanity of the Lord.

Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

**Luke 2:35 **"…and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

John 2:5 "His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Mary sees a need and appeals to Her Son to satisfy it. He does. We turn to Mary to ask her to intercede with her Son in our daily spiritual and material needs, but especially at the hour of our death. At that moment our salvation hangs in the balance as the devil makes his final foray to deter us from the path to God (Rev. 2:10). It is not surprising, therefore, that both the Hail Mary and the Our Father conclude with an appeal to be delivered from the evil one.

I can not remember which website I got this from.🤷 but it was so good I saved it,without the url.😊

Thanks for that fellowChristian!

A quick google search reveals it is from EWTN. Here is the link.

Thank you all very much for the information. I have found my self praying the hail mary on occasion and the rosary. I do find it a usefull meditation on the scriptures. I do find I can not discuss it though in a Lutheran circle without geting bumbarded. I this will be very helpful in discussons with in the “Lutheran circle.”

I do have another question. I tried to pray the Rosary with my wife and she clames to have been badly spooked. She said that I did not sound like my self and this disturbed her. Now she does not want to continue. Any advise.

When we are in meditative prayer, our minds and bodies relax, allowing us to shut out the noise and distraction of the world. When our bodies relax, by extention, our vocal cords likewise do. When we are meditating, we tend to slow down which is also noted in our speech pattern. All of this plays a role in how our voices Sound.

You could ask your wife if your voice sounds the same when you are stressed and hurried as it does when you are relaxed:shrug:

There are many reasons why our voices sound different when praying, maybe an Angel is joining his voice to yours in the Rosary prayers?

I talked with her about this. She said my voise sounded posessed. I know no evil can come throgh the rosary. She seems still hesitant to try again at this time though.

I have a rosary CD called
“the Rosary” by Gretchen Harris

You can get it on Amazon - when you type it in, click on new and used and click on here name (to buy it direct from her).

It goes for 80 minutes so 20 mins for each of the 4 mysteries. There is tasteful instrumental music in the background and she prays each one with a priest. You can pray aloud with the CD or silently along.

I find it really helps to focus and create a consistancy. It is very meditative and 20 mins a mystery isnt that much time out of my day.

There are other Rosary CDs but some are intertwined with pop songs - ahh! Love pop just not for the Rosary.

Being 20 mins initially the CD sounded rushed but after a few times you get used to the rhythm.

This CD may be of help. I pray the rosary a lot more often since I purchased it. 👍

We find what we seek. Is she trying to hear reverence and devotion in your voice, or is she trying to hear possession?

This I do not know. I know when I do pray it though sometimes quite infrequent I feel nothing but reverence.

Thank you for the resource. I will have to try and make use of it.

An excellent and comprehensive (350 pgs) book recommendation:

Rosary: Mysteries, Meditations and the Telling of the Beads by Kevin Orlin Johnson, PhD.

Less comprehensive (192 pgs) but still very informative:

The Seeker’s Guide to the Rosary by Liz Kelly

For a Scriptural Rosary (along with some beautiful watercolor pictures):

Speak Lord, I am Listening by Christine Haapala

It says it’s for children but I think it’s fabulous, it gives you a Scripture verse to pray along with each Hail Mary. 😃
