Greeetings all.
I am not a Scripture Scholar or a authority on Jewish history – that being said, I have the following to relate - then a question:
My pastor in his sermon yesterday regarding the passage from Isaiah and the dishonest steward, Shebna – kept refering to him as “her” and called him “Shebina.”
Now, my pastor is fairly solid in his doctrine – but is very much harried because of having four parishes (he gets things done rather quickly if you get my drift) – so I believe he did not check the reading as closely as he should have. I do not believe he has any type of “agenda” regarding so-called female “ordination” – but, he then connected (rightly) the Isaiah reading with the Matthew reading and Jesus’ naming Peter as the first Pope.
I checked Chapter 22 from Isaiah and it says this:
*Thus says the Lord, the GOD of hosts: Up, go to that official, Shebna, master of the palace, Who has hewn for himself a sepulcher on a height and carved **his *tomb in the rock: “What are you doing here, and what people have you here, that here you have hewn for yourself a tomb?” The LORD shall hurl you down headlong, mortal man! (Is. 22:15-17)
No mention of a “Shebina” – “herself” – or “her.”
My wife said he said the same thing at the afternoon Mass at one of our four parishes.
Question: Did the Davidic Kingdom ever have a female royal steward? (the only office I am aware of in the Davidic Kingdom that had a female was the Geburah – the King’s mother!). If not, should I send a charitable note to my pastor asking him for clarification?
I mean – this was really confusing to me and my family.
Thanks in advance for any help – I will not be able to check replies until late this afternoon.
God bless,
Kev
