preface: im a recent convert and have only attended one parish, so i thought id check out the other ones in the area just to see what they were up to, no problems at mine, just curiosity.

so i visited this one church this past sunday and i need to write about it because it was such a shock to me.i arrive at the building, nondescript, looks like possible late 70’s. i enter and go into the sanctuary, first thing i look for is a tabernacle. none. all i see is a wood altar, a wood podium, a couple chairs and a open front nightstand looking item with glass goblets and hand sanitizer sitting on it. so i dont genuflect and i sit. i notice all the parishioners genuflecting when they come in, i assumed we only genuflect in the direction of the tabernacle. when the procession begins, the altar boys are dressed in khakis and white polos (im used to robes) and carrying a cross that i think has skittles glued on to it, it was very colorful yet abstract. oh yeah, and the flute. i almost dropped to my knees to pray that aqualung wasn’t going to be the hymn.

anyways, we get through the readings and the singing and the massive tambourine solo at the end of the gloria and we get to the eucharistic prayer. we are all told in the program that we are supposed to stand (GIRM regulation) through the prayer and through till the end of communion. when the gifts are brought forward, the bread is brought on a large glass platter and the wine is brought in a large glass kool-aid type pitcher. the glass goblets are set out on the alter by a eucharistic minister (thats what the name tags said) and he pours the wine into the glasses and the the priest says the prayer over the bread and the wine. and then the priest goes into a short lecture about transubstantiation and everyone goes up to receive.

i just dont know what to think about all this. alot of this seemed very loose and incorrect. when i got home i wanted to go immediately to my parish for mass but was unable to due to family stuff.

i thank god for my parish and my priest.

I’ve done that many times too. Our priests give us a good home at St. Mary’s, without any of the stuff you hear about at other parishes.

Also pray for the parish you visited-that they may come to see the error of their ways.

You will find very different parishes within the same city and across the country and the world – some with variation within reason, some outside reason!

And if you really want to blow your mind, attend an Eastern Catholic Church.

That’s what we did! After casting about for a parish with reverence for the sacraments, a good community, intelligent homiletics, good music, in a neighborhood where I wasn’t afraid to bring my kids…Maronite it was and Maronite it remains.

Are you sure this was a Catholic Church?

I’ve seen–charitably–irregularities, but not this many in a single sitting.

If this was a parish of the diocese in which you live, do contact the Bishop and tell him what you observed.
