Which do you find more troublesome, that it is recognized as a church/religion, or it is made tax exempt?

Personally, I don’t view it as a church/religion, but I’m not so bold to think because I don’t agree with Satanists that I think they should not be given tax exemption…otherwise I would want many Protestant sects, Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, and other church/religions to not be given tax exemptions…which might only lead to losing tax exemption for all churches/religions, including Mother Church…I think my dad used to say, “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face”.

neither. I believe anyone has the rigbt to beleive in whatever they wish as long as it doesn’t hurt others. But the fact that some people would want Satan as God blows my mind…

I’ve read about these and ostensibly there are different “sects” some of which worship Satan while others only have his foul name in their names.

I don’t approve of the Church of Scientology
having a tax exempt status either. Or having a cross on their building as they have nothing to do with Christianity.

Why anyone would want to join a Satanic Temple is beyond me.

Yeah, this is the group that doesn’t worship Satan directly. They don’t do black masses and such.

That said, and I hope people on here know I don’t go about crying “demon!” or talking about the demonic often, they’re still doing Satan’s work and under his moniker. Teaching men to mock God, to be gods for themselves… it just reminds me of the story in Genesis.

I would call them rabble-rousers, rather than a “religion,” akin to the flying spaghetti nonsense.

This is the unintended consequence of tax exemption for churches. Similar to the issue of free speech, which presupposes protecting speech that you disagree with, often viscerally.

yikes! What I don’t like is the word ‘church’ used. I think that’s cultural abuse.

Why do they pick on the poor goats? Goats are the nicest of hooved animals, so domesticated and easy to raise. It makes no sense at all. Then again evil never does make sense.

Probably comes from Jesus separating the sheep from the goats in His parable of the Final Judgement.

Back in the late sixties/early seventies the church of Satan was quite the hip, cool, popular thing among the Hollywood types.
From what I gather, it was short on metaphysics and long on partying.

What do you think of these (on face value)?
  • One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
  • The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
  • One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
  • The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one’s own.
  • Beliefs should conform to one’s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one’s beliefs.
  • People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one’s best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
  • Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

They do not worship Satan, because they do not believe in such a being. They exist mainly to keep religions in check, from getting rights that are exclusive. What is the problem with that?

Bit of an over generalization. In fact a great many in hollywood are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc…

Just to provide context for a moment because this conversation can veer all over the place you should know what Satanic religion is.

The really fast and short answer is a protest religion. People join it to be free of religion. They don’t worships Satan as much make a point to admire in all creation myths there’s a guy why wants to rebel and makes his own thing. Free of whatever rules the supposedly good guy deity’s do.

Some places have off brand but no less accepted various oddities of the same stripe based on other cultures.
Church of Loki
Church of Set
Church of Molok (Lord of the rings) 😋

It’s ironic and stupid but for the most part isn’t what you think. If you want to combat it you should at lest understand it.

LOL let me guess—the “big reveal” will be that these are tenets of the gasp! Church of Satan (dun-dun-duuun)

Okay.
My serious and non-jokey answer is that on the surface, they’re not half-bad. Derivative, but not half bad.
The problem is they’re too broad to be meaningful. The majority of people already see themselves as being fairminded and on the side of justice.
But show me how these principles play out in everyday life.

That’s exactly the point! Just by using Satan in their name they know many people will condemn, fear and rally against them without knowing anything about them. That’s the kind of behavior they stand against. They know their name will provoke that behavior and hope in doing so to expose issues, open dialogue and get people to investigate before passing judgement.

They want to serve as an example so people will stop, think and evaluate various positions and practices rather than simply accept knee jerk responses and old norms.

Indeed. Their choice of name is more provocative then emblematic. Think Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Church of the Jedi. They’ve just chosen a name they knew would get the biggest rise out of devout Christians… particularly those that aren’t keen to share the world with non-Christian religions.

That’s said, all of the imagery they’ve appropriated is straight out of the true Satanic worship or stylized versions of the same from entertainment media.
