I read our Blessed Mother gave a scapular to St Simon Stock. Where is the actual scapular now?

  1. There is considerable historical uncertainty and debate over whether Mary actually gave the scapular to St. Simon Stock.
  2. If you mean where is the actual scapular she gave St. Simon, as stated in (1) it is debatable whether this ever literally happened. In any event, that first scapular would have disintegrated or been lost long ago.

I would imagine if it is still or was in existence, it will be with a Carmelite Monastery as a treasured relic.

Just a couple of months ago @angel12 gave us the sad news, on another thread, that the Carmelites themselves no longer regard the apparition to St. Simon Stock as a historical fact.

I can’t speak for the Dominicans, but investigation of the Simon Stock vision (by Carmelites themselves) has cast doubt on its authenticity, and it no longer taught as fact.

Thanks for your reply guys. I understand the scapular was already in existence with the Benedictines. I’m guessing Our Lady elevated the scapular with a promise of salvation?

Scapulars, as in the monastic garment generally, have been in use since the 7th century. There are a large number of different colors and types of scapulars associated with different orders and devotions. The Brown Scapular is the one we are talking about here.

Regarding Our Lady “elevating” the scapular “with a promise of salvation”, as we have explained above, it is no longer taught as fact that Mary gave the scapular to St. Simon Stock or appeared to him in a vision.
Nor is it taught nowadays that Mary will take all the souls of Scapular wearers to heaven on the Saturday after their death, etc.
One wears the scapular piously as a sign of devotion to Mary and one can have hope in her intercession, but there is no “promise of salvation” for wearing it.

Can you please advise which pope offically declared we no longer believe such things to support what you’re saying?

The Carmelite Order controls the Brown Scapular, as it is meant to be the lay version of their habit, and they are the ones who say so.

Edited to add, here is the official Carmelite scapular catechesis. Please see the section on Promises which notes that in 1613 the Carmelite Order was told by the Holy See to stop teaching the Sabbatine Privilege, and they eventually complied. Edited again to add, I believe the Pope as of 1613 was Pope Paul V.

In addition, it is basic Catholic teaching that one should never regard a sacramental as a “magic charm” that grants its users entrance to Heaven.

I just now found this thread. Thank you for posting the scapular catechesis “Tis_Bearself”. Many things were clarified by that catechesis.

It also explains that the Brown Scapular does not have to be 100% wool.

I am sure there was great inspiration with regard to the beginnings of the miniature Carmelite habit, but Our Blessed Mother did not appear in an apparition and hand a habit to wear to St. Simon Stock. (Who prayed much for Our Lady’s Order, and I am sure she answered his prayers.)

It is taking a long time for this information to trickle down.

It’s a nice story so I understand why people want to believe it.
I had a coloring book as a child all about St Simon and the Brown Scapular. It showed how he was a holy hermit who lived in a tree trunk and prayed, and he would bless Knights on the way to the Crusades, and at the end Our Lady appeared and gave him the scapular.
I think of it often.
