Has anyone seen or read it? What is your opinion of it? I was wondering what the underlying the philosophy is and why everyone else seems to have read it.

It is not consistent with Catholic teaching.

My opinion is that the goals are selfish.

The Law of Attraction, on the other hand, has some real world principles behind it that I can agree with (as a non-Catholic). The LOA is an underlying principle behind “The Secret”, but the writers of “The Secret” take it too far and mold it into a prosperity gospel.

Peace…

That depends what you mean by real world principles. If you are trying to say that this is supported by something physical, like quantum mechanics, then, no, it does not have real world principles behind it. If by real world principles you mean that, psychologically, keeping a positive attitude may make you more likely to achieve your goal, you’re probably correct.

I had to take opposition to “The Secret” when my employer (a govt agency) began teaching it in a managment class. They finally agreed with my objections, and the material was dropped. I have since been in contact with “This Rock” about it, and there was some talk of one of their regular contributors writing an article on it for a future issue.

Bottom line…“The Secret” is nonesense, and it is particularly hard on those people who are experiencing hardship in their lives, since it teaches that we bring good or evil on ourselves. So, if you’re unemployed and sick, this new age philosophy would say it’s all your fault, and that you need to simply think more possitive thoughts to cure that cancer, etc. It’s a load of hogwash–to put it gently.

For me, in other words, you reap what you sow mind and body. I believe in self-fulfilling prophecy to varying degrees. If your mind is focused on using drugs and getting your next fix you will undoubtedly hang around drug pushers and users and be more prone to criminal behavior, etc.

That’s not what The Secret is about, though. For example, godly and good people do suffer in this life–in fact, the argument could be made that they suffer more deeply. The Secret is something like “Prosperity Gospel”, but without the Gospel part. The last straw for me was when they tried to say that Mother Teresa was one of their proponents. Unlike Mother Teresa, The Secret is all about the exaltation of the self over the community–or God.

I can understand if it appears to encourage oneself over God it would be troubling, but would it not be good to be an individual who follows one’s own path rather than another member of the community. The values of the masses are hardly to be embraced.

Yes, I think I mentioned the “prosperity gospel” problem. And of course it’s true that Christians can and do suffer. Well, I would say it leaves God out of the picture and looks at the person as whole in themselves. And in that respect it obviously falls short of any truth.
