My friend was asking me who “the seven archangels” were, and I informed her we only know the names of three archangels, Raphael, Gabriel, and Michael. Apparantly, though, there is a verse mentions Gabriel or Raphael as “one of the seven” that “stand before the Lord” or something. I can’t find the verse, as my Internet is resisting me today-I’m lucky to be here, but I saw it with my own two eyes. What is this all about?

Only the three you mention are named in scripture.
I copied the following extract from the online Catholic Encyclopedia:

Of these seven “archangels” which appear in the angelology of post-Exilic Judaism, only three, Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, are mentioned in the canonical Scriptures. The others, according to the Book of Enoch (cf. xxi) are Uriel, Raguel, Sariel, and Jerahmeel, while from other apocryphal sources we get the variant names Izidkiel, Hanael, and Kepharel instead of the last three in the other list.

"For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord."
(DRV)
**
"I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord.”**
(NRSV)

Tobit 12:15

Just for a BTW verse that you were looking for…

God bless!

Looking for clarification. Are you saying that the book of Enoch gives one set of names and that the other apocryphal books give another? Who is right?

These books aren’t part of the Bible, so what either one of them says has no authority.

Daniel Marsh:
First Enoch chapter twenty names the archangels as Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Sariel, Gabriel, and Remiel.
Note they all end in “el” , which I understand means “of God”. So Raphael means “Healing of God”. The other names all mean something special, but I can’t recall what they are, except I think Michael meals “Like God” or “Likeness of God”.

smile my name also ends in el, which means God is Judge, interresting note.

Then there is the one they sing about so much this time of the year , Hark 🙂

In the novena to the seven archangels that my grandma has this is how it gives the names of the Archangels as,
Michael
Gabriel
Raphael
Uriel
Judiel
Sealtiel (or Salathiel)
Barachiel

Some actually believe there is an archangel named Metatron.
