I think we are in uncharted territory, never before has a society made same sex relations into an intstitution. It may have been in a way socially acceptable behind closed doors, but even in the height of a societies perversion it was never even attempted at being institutionalized on par with marriage.
The difference of now and then is reliable birth control and sterilization, the reason against it gets lost.
