The Sign of Peace continues to bring division

I used to look around to greet others but don’t anymore and no longer want to shake hands with strangers during the Sign of Peace. Families taking up all the time greeting each other is an “out” for me. Unless there are other single people near me who I willingly greet and vice versa – usually by nodding and smiling – I put my head down. No one notices and it’s soon over.
100% agree. I just greet other lone church members if they are close to me, otherwise I stare straight ahead. We have one priest who wants us to greet each other at the beginning of mass too. Ugh.

The Sign of Peace is optional and it should be phased out.
What I do now is follow the suggestion of a member here from about a month ago. Just bow my head and close my eyes during this segment.

We have a new, young, loving priest. He often has us turn around and greet the people behind us after announcements (before the recessional) and tell them “Jesus loves you!” or “Thank you for coming to Mass today!” Not usually done with a hand shake, though. And yes, it’s a little awkward, but a good way to get us out of our comfort zones and start showing Christ’s love to each other. 😀 God’s people should not be cold and unfriendly, especially after being filled with Presence of our Lord!

I enjoy the sign of peace when I get it. When I am concerned about germs I just use hand sanitizer.

I like how it used to be a “kiss of peace” on the altar. Now it’s become a source of distraction during a very important part of the mass. And it’s not even because it’s being abused. It’s just uneccessary. People complain about Catholics being unwelcoming, and unfortunately I don’t think the sign of peace solves it. Generosity comes from the heart, out of our own free will. Not some forced handshake and scripted dialogue.

Plus, I have social anxiety and it has also caused me to lose my peace during the mass.

But He is physically in us for a few moments after we’ve commuicated. Body, Blood, Soul, and Diviinity.

Not so at other times of day, when His will is merely holding us together.

Based on your own premise…why shouldn’t the sign of peace follow Communicating, when His very body, blood, soul and divinity are present in us?

When would we be more disposed to full and true unity?

No, the Confetior is; in fact the whole penetential rite is. And then the “Lord I am not worthy” prayer is as well.

On what basis are you questioning that Deacon Jeff is actually a Deacon? It’s quite disrespectful.

So, let’s ask the better question.

What is the sign of peace adding that the Confitior/Penetential Rite/Lord I am not worthy prayer don’t provide/accomplish.

It’s optional and thus not essential to the Mass.

Well I don’t really know who people are here. Do you?

On the basis of what objective evidence?

We know their posting history and content of what they post. Generally, I don’t accuse other posters of lying, but that’s just me.

Edward would have a melt down attending Mass at my parish.

Our priest starts the Mass by asking everyone to turn to the persons around you and introduce yourselves.

We also shown the sign of peace.

The goal is to have us come together to worship as a community of friends, rather than a group of strangers.

Jim

Well, it seems clear to me this thread itself has simply proven the point of the OP.

The Kiss of Peace as practiced is clearly divisive - whatever the reasons for it being practiced as it is…
I’m not sure it’s the “kiss of peace” so much as “the internet” that’s divisive.

Having been around CAF, I know any of the following are divisive:
  • The sign of peace
  • communion on the hand/tongue
  • communion under one or both species
  • EF vs OF
  • Vatican II
  • head coverings on women
  • really, pretty much any clothing on women
  • altar girls
  • democrats
  • republicans
  • the pope
And I could go on.
