I’ve read LoTR and the Hobbit, but got stalled with the Silmarillion. :o I do want to go back to it some day.

I do, however, greatly enjoy the Symphonic Epic Power Metal concept album based on “The Silmarillion.” It’s called Nightfall in Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian. Great stuff, if you’re in to that sort of thing. It’s one of my all-time favorite albums (and has been since even before I read any of Tolkien’s books).
I love the Silmarillion! It gives so much meaning to the events of TLOTR!
I never would have guessed with such a user name! 😛
My daughter is even named Lorien- after either the dreamweaver Valar or the shortened version of Lothlorien.
That’s awesome. I love that name. I have thought of that as a girl’s name before. I would so name my daughter that, but I don’t think I’d ever convince my wife to go for it. Maybe I can talk her into using it as a middle name (if we have another girl, that is). 🙂

I found that it helps to approach the Silmarilion as if it were several texts (which is exactly what it is). It’s compilation of stories written by Tolkien as background for the Hobbit and LOTR.

The book is in several parts containing histories from the Istari, the Elves, and Men. The sections literally reflect their view of the history of Middle Earth, and they are not supposed to be 100% in step with each other. Basically, the book is supposed to appear as if it were a series of manuscripts handed down from the 1st through the 4th era of Middle Earth. If you put yourself in Gandalf’s shoes, and pretend you were going over the old manuscripts, the book can be a lot of fun.

Btw, I have a first edition copy, which has a wonderful pull out map pasted to the back cover. 🙂
