What are the reasons for believing Jesus is both human and divine?
There is a lot of biblical evidence for it. When he claimed to be the Messiah from a prophecy (I think it was Isaiah) the people from his town were questioning him and they said stuff like “is this not the son of Mary and Joseph?” So they didn’t think there was anything special about him. What are the reasons for believing Jesus is both human and divine?
Good points! The fact that everyone knew Jesus is incontrovertible evidence that He was human. And the fact that He "rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still” is very unlikely to have been invented. People generally associate miracles with prayer, not direct commands to the elements. There is a lot of biblical evidence for it. When he claimed to be the Messiah from a prophecy (I think it was Isaiah) the people from his town were questioning him and they said stuff like “is this not the son of Mary and Joseph?” So they didn’t think there was anything special about him.
John 6
41 - The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven.
42 - And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he, I came down from heaven?
In the Old Testament God is referred to as YHWH or “I AM”
There was a part in the New Testament where Jesus said 'before Abraham was I AM"
John 8
57 - The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 - Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.
Also, he performed miracles confirming what he said was true. He stopped a storm by willing it to stop, not praying to by praying to God to stop it.
This was soon after He had said to them when they about to stone the woman taken in adultery: “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her”! They cannot accuse Him of having sinned so they resort to saying He is possessed:"If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
To condemn the Pharisees as children of the devil and liars in front of the ordinary people in the Temple is not the stuff of fiction. It demonstrates that Jesus was not afraid to tell the truth regardless of the consequences - which, as He knew full well, were to be His arrest and crucifixion.48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, “If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like you: but I know him, and keep his saying.”
The irony is complete. Once again the sinners are about to cast stones and kill another person who doesn’t deserve to die. Jesus has identified Himself with all those who have been punished and executed unjustly by self-righteous hypocrites who exploit the poor and kill those who condemn them:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
The irony is complete. Once again the sinners are about to cast stones and kill another person who doesn’t deserve to die. Jesus has identified Himself with all those who have been punished and executed unjustly by self-righteous hypocrites who exploit the poor and kill those who condemn them:
The historical role of Jesus was predicted by the prophets and He in turn predicted the outcome of His mission, not only His own crucifixion but also the deaths of the martyrs who were to follow Him, the destruction of the Temple and the Diaspora. Even the unique history of the Jews since then culminating with the Holocaust demonstrates that the Chosen People embody the constant warfare between good and evil. They have persecuted others but they too have been persecuted to an unbelievable extent.29 ‘Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the upright, 30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in our ancestors’ day."
31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!
32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.
33 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?
34 This is why – look – I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughter and crucify, some you will scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;
35 and so you will draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed on earth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
36 In truth I tell you, it will all recoil on this generation.
37 ‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often have I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!
38 Look! Your house will be deserted,
39 for, I promise, you shall not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!’
And me!He died on the cross for the accusation of stating He was the Son of God. He wasn’t stealing bread or beating up someone. He was preaching His Gospel and was arrested for it. He was either Divine or He was an idiotic madman…and idiotic madmen don’t influence millions of people to change and seek peace. Nor do they succeed at miracles, especially the Resurrection.
Proof enough for me.
The word comes from late Middle English: via Old French from Latin divinus, from divus ‘godlike’ (related to deus 'god’). oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/divineWhat is the full Catholic meaning of the word “divine”?
Thankyou tonyreyThe word comes from late Middle English: via Old French from Latin divinus, from divus ‘godlike’ (related to deus ‘god’). oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/divine
The Church teaches that Jesus is God!Thankyou tonyrey
So Catholicism says that Jesus is “of, or like God, or a god”?
.
For Christians God is a Community united by love. If the Creator were one Person existing in “spendid isolation” He would be the apotheosis of egoism! We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
**God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, **
begotten, not made,
one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation,
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
As one inculcated into the “New Math” and expert in Venn diagrams but not skilled with actual calculations, the best foundation for Jesus Christ as fully God and fully Man–delighting as He did in titling Himself “Son of Man,”–is the primal revelation that mankind alone, not any angel or any animal, was made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, for God to Incarnate as Christ did creates a compatible, cogent subset revealing the unity with divinity as the marital unity with divinity of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit; and the unity with divinity in our final marriage of the Church to the Bridegroom upon His return; and the unity with divinity Christ ardently desires for all in His praying that Christians, the Messianic Jews of the New & Eternal Covenant, would be as united in Christ as Christ is with Abba, our Father. SELAH!
John 10:16And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.
So the Church does not really teach “divinity” as per the definitions given, correct? The Church teaches that Jesus is God!
In the Nicene Creed we say:
For Christians God is a Community united by love. If the Creator were one Person existing in “spendid isolation” He would be the apotheosis of egoism!![]()
Jesus is GodSo the Church does not really teach “divinity” as per the definitions given, correct?
“Of” God is not the same as “IS” God…
.
The Son of God and God the Father are one and the same Being because They co-exist eternally and are totally united by perfect love. It is understandable that we cannot **fully **understand the divine nature. Those who claim to define God precisely overestimate their intelligence because human definitions impose limits on His infinite wisdom, power and love. All the terms we use are analogous and imperfect but they guide us towards the truth because Jesus has given us insight into the divine nature through His example and teaching. Love is the highest form of knowledge. So the Church does not really teach “divinity” as per the definitions given, correct?
“Of” God is not the same as “IS” God…
