Why is mediumship so frowned upon by the Catholic Church? It involves receiving a message from a loved one who has passed. The catechism just states to avoid it, with no reason being given. I would have thought the spirit world, which must be linked to the soul, would have particular relevance to us Catholics?

You do not need to contact family that have died. You only need to trust in God and his will for them, and for you.

And you could be contacting demons posing as family anyway.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

2116
All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

Do we have any examples from Saints or the Bible on this issue?

Here are some Bible Verses That talk about the occult.

Leviticus 19:31 ESV / 7 helpful votes Thank you for your vote.

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

Isaiah 8:19 ESV / 5 helpful votes

And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

2 Kings 21:6 ESV / 5 helpful votes

And he burned his son as an offering and used fortune-telling and omens and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.

I found those verses online from the English Standard Version, but those verses are found in the Catholic Bible too, so they still apply to Catholic. I hope this helps!!! 🙂
