I have always been so inspired by the faith and resolve of these men. It appears in our Bibles in 2 Maccabees.
However in my NRSV W Deuterocanonical Books, which also includes books in the Orthodox Bibles but not in ours, I was struck to see that 4 Maccabees expands on the story of these martyrs very much so . Although 4 Maccabees was traditionally in the Septuagint, along with 3 Maccabees ( which actually has nothing to do with the story of the other Maccabees books but is in the Canon of Orthodox Bibles), 4 Maccabees has always had somewhat of a para canonical status in only being placed in an appendix to the Greek Bible. Somewhat like in the Vulgate, 3 and 4 Esdras ( or 1 and 2 if you go by the more recent numbering) and the Prayer of Mannaseh.
However if you also are inspired by these martyrs I would definitely recommend 4 Maccabees. It very much expands on it and although the book is more a book on reason over emotions, it is very interesting.
I always wondered why 1 and 2 Maccabees made the Catholic Canon but 3 and 4 Maccabees did not. However this post isn’t about that subject.
