He was one of my favorites as a young child. I was your typical kid who is fascinated by gory horror stories. There was a big painting of him on the wall of the church, holding a grill. I don’t think my parents knew who he was or what that was in his hand or they probably would have been horrified at me knowing such a story about him.
 
His story reminds us of the cruelty of Emperor Valerian and the fact that in the third century, Christians were still being killed left and right.
 
You left out St. Vincent of Saragossa, also a deacon and also roasted on a gridiron (some say a hot plate).
He is the Protomartyr of Spain.
