The story of the crabs in a basket

You might have heard this story or one similar to it. Our priest shared it in his homily one time. Here it is:

A man from the Midwest was on vacation on the coast and saw crab fishermen setting baskets full of crabs onto the dock. He noticed the baskets did not have lids.

Curious, he asked a fisherman, “Why don’t your baskets have lids on them? What keeps the crabs from getting out and scattering?”

The crab fisherman explained that they do not need lids because every time a crab climbs up the side to get out, another crab always reaches up and pulls it back down.
 
Humans can be like crabs. We pull each other down instead of supporting each other up. We need to follow Jesus so that we will not be like that.

Crabs are not pulling each other down for any morale reason. They survive by climbing on things. Outside of their natural habitat they are in panic mode and desperate to get to water.
 
I know its an example of anthropomorphism. I still like the way it makes me think of human nature.
