Good morning! Happy new year.

So I am thinking of going to Mass today. Today is a holy day of obligation in Korea.

Now, I have a physical disability that makes my muscles to atrophy. Because of this, I cannot walk long distances. Without my parents driving me, I cannot go to church because there are no buses until I reach the bus stop, which is a few kilometers away.

I have asked my parents to go with me, but they are saying “Why do we have to go?” when I tried to convince them. I am stuck because I cannot walk all the way to the bus stop without having my parents assist me to get there.

Due to this, I don’t know if I can make it to Mass.

Would this put me under a mortal sin if I don’t go? Fingers crossed that my parents agree on driving me to church.

No.

You are not obligated to do what you cannot do.

You are excused from the obligation for illness, infirmity, being dependent upon other for transportation, inclement weather, care of infants/sick people, work, and other such serious reasons.

I understand your situation. I also have a difficulty walking to my church even though it’s only two blocks from my apartment building. I was told that because of my inability to walk up the hill where my church is, I’m excused from attending. So, rest assured that you are not committing a sin.

You could request a home visit by your priest and have the Eucharist at home.

And, if you can, you can watch the Mass on television.

I have a rare form of muscular dystrophy that causes my muscles to atrophy over time. Recently, I’ve been having intense hip pain that renders me unable to walk long distances. Also, I feel that hills are the worst! I have more pain walking downhill or uphill. It’s horrible.
I’m more at peace knowing that I am not committing a mortal sin. However, my parents (who are Catholics) are not going so I’m urging them to go to confession.
I’ll watch the Mass in English when it comes online on EWTN.
