Do you know if the suffering they endure is physical, and if they can pray for us, can they also pray for themselves?

I have heard the poor souls pray for us, just like the Saints do/.I don’t know if it is true or just one of those things that you pick up as trivia

I realize no one can be sure about the suffering of the poor souls, but I wonder if any of the Saints have told us anything about purgatory?:angel1:

I am not sure we can use “suffering” and “physical” in the traditional sense, since we don’t know what type of cleansing the soul is going through and their are no bodies, only spirits in purgatory. I think the only thing I am sure of is that those in purgatory long to leave and see God face to face.

The souls in purgatory are part of the communion of saints (the Chruch Suffering) and as such can pray for us. They cannot pray for themselves, which is why it is always a work of mercy to pray for the dead.

The Doctor is correct in saying that the souls in purgatory cannot pray for themselves. As part of the Church, their being the Church Suffering they can pray for those of us here on earth, who comprise the Church Militant. It is our task to pray for the Church Suffering, (those souls in purgatory) and because of the efficacious power of prayer, when we pray for them, it is as if we were praying for each of them individually. The Church Triumphant (the souls in heaven) pray for both the Church Militant and the Church Suffering. Please, pray daily for those suffering souls in purgatory as they are saints in waiting. I say this, because a saint is any soul in heaven. Canonization is not necessary for them to be considered a saint. All the canonization process is, is the Church proclaiming, “de fide” that that particular soul is in heaven. This is where we all hope to be some day.

Tan publishing has a book called “Purgatory” which is awesome reading for those who are interested.

Purification of the soul after death is not ‘physical’ because we leave the physical behind when we die. Those experiencing purgatory, however, are fully alive as a soul, and I know that, at times, some have manifested themselves through the grace of God and have asked for prayers to lessen their sufferings. I do not know if they can pray this intention for themselves.

The Church consists of three integral parts, all inter-related: the Church Militant (the Church on earth), the Church Suffering (the souls in purgatory), and the Church Triumphant (the souls in Heaven). We can pray for the Church Suffering, and so does the Church Triumphant. Again, I do not see why the Church Suffering cannot pray for us, just as do the saints.

This is just my take on the ‘suffering’ issue of those experiencing purgatory. We have both a conscious and unconscious mind. We know through the psychological sciences just how powerful the unconscious mind is, and how it contains all of our fears, phobias, guilt, etc. which affects our entire life. When we die, the conscious (physical) mind passes away with the body, but I believe that we are conscious much as we are now but with the residue of our unconscious that must eventually be ‘purged’ through God’s love and grace. When you think about it, it’s a scary thought to be confronted with one’s unconscious and all of its content without the grace of God.
