"The Supper of the Lord" - Consubstantiation?

We could always just sing the propers instead of hymns; then we wouldn’t even have to wonder whether a particular text is appropriate, since we would be singing the text that the Church has specifically assigned to a particular liturgical action.

The arguing and wondering whether this hymn or that hymn is appropriate really confuses me, as if hymns are themselves some proper part of the liturgy.

Jesus did call himself the “bread of life”. So I do not see anything wrong with referring to the Eucharist as bread. While hymns should be theologically correct, it shouldn’t be a catechesis in a way that the song is trying to explain the faith.

The hymn stated that Christ was in the bread. That is theologically was off base.

Maybe they could have said something like…

Precious Body, Precious Blood, seen as bread and wine

or something… honestly it does seem like consubstantiation to me, though they probably (hopefully) didn’t mean it that way. After the Consecration, there is not bread and wine anymore.

Hate to bump a dead thread…but in the new Breaking Bread, they fixed it…and “seen as bread and wine” is EXACTLY what they changed it to! (we sung it as our Communion hymn at the vigil Mass earlier tonight)
