In The Second Letter to the Corinthians, Chapter 12 Verse 2 states:

I knew someone in Christ who, fourteen years ago was caught up in the third heaven.    
 
 What is the third heaven?

My [strictly amateur] take on this is that the first heaven is the atmospheric “heaven,” the sky where birds (and airplanes) fly. The second heaven is the “starry heaven,” the rest of the universe. Strictly speaking, the third heaven would not be a part of this creation; it is the “alternate universe” in which God dwells.
