The Tower of Babel: Why do people on CAF argue so much?

Has anybody else come to notice how much people argue on CAF, often to the point of insults and rudeness? Actually, it’s not just CAF, but it seems to be everywhere; in our schools, place of employment and our very household. Why do people argue so much? Is there a deeper truth to the Tower of Babel? How could have our world develop the way it has over the past 150 years with such strong miscommunication?
 
We do not argue here at CAF!

I think you’re right. There is a tendency towards bickering – not just here, but everywhere.

You bring up an interesting connection with the Tower of Babel. I’ll have to think that one over. :hmmm:

George Weigel penned an article a few days ago on The Gentlemanly Art of the Insult. I thought it was an interesting concept. I think it’s true that nowadays, people are more likely to be bitingly blunt and vicious when disagreeing with others. There are better ways to disagree.
 
Saint Benedict’s Rule begins with the words “Listen with the ear of your heart”, which I believe is a trait many people lack. It speaks of empathy, of the ability to feel for another, but many of us (myself included) are often so wrapped up in our own feelings on a matter that we don’t always worry about how other people feel.

Rudness always had and always will exist, but it stems from our inability to reconcile our injury to another’s motive. A student who is reprimanded may become rude, for example, if he doesn’t place the same value in his education that the teacher does, or if he is perhaps insulted by being singled out in front of the entire class.

Just a thought. I’m a business student, not a psychiatric expert.
 
Let’s make a conscious effort to pray against it when we see it in a forum, to the extent of even adding the prayer to the thread.

Make us an instrument of Thy Peace, O Lord.
 
Not to endorse “means” of arguing that do not reflect what one reads in the Gospel. Such should not take place.

But just wanted to note that “to argue” is supposed to mean that those engaged are are not fighting…but together searching for the Truth. As I recall from St. Thomas.
 
On Wikipedia, there was a six week, bitter argument about whether the final episode of NBC/ABC’s Scrubs was a single, hour long episode, or two half-hour episodes.

In Christianity, there has been a 900 year-old argument about whether the Holy Spirit proceeds from just the Father, or from the Father and Son.

In Humanity, there has been a 10,000 year argument about whether it is acceptable to murder your neighbor or children.

As Humans and Christians, I think we need to step back, look at where we invest our time and energy.

Yes, if only more people nowadays truly argued in this scholastic sense rather than argued in the fisticuffs sense. 🙂

Could be, I do know that when ever I remembered the Story of the Tower of Babel I use to wonder what the language was that the people use to speak and understand each other in before their tongues where confused.
 
Although I agree with everyone that it would be nice if everyone was much more polite and understanding when we dabated each other. I fail to understand why you think it has only been in the last 150 years that we have been arguing like this. My quess is that even the apostles had some fairly heated discussions. It is just our human nature, fallen the way it is, to tend to want to get our point across espeacially when we are pasionate about subject such as religion & politics. I don’t know if this has gotten worse or better over the years…

You misunderstood me. I’m not at all saying miscommunication only occurred during the past 150 years, but I’m simply asking how could our world have undergone all the development with such miscommunication in place.

Not all communication is miscommunication. Sometimes what the sender means is what the receiver understands. At that point progress is made.

Although, I have had some people really mad at me and I have been mad at some people but really from my heart I just want to understand better. Sometimes I keep pushing a point because I don’t think they are hearing me. Sometimes I don’t want them to have the last word. Sometimes I have been offended and I return the favor. Sometimes I have just had a bad day. Sometimes they refuse to admit they have been bested and me too. Sometimes those smilies seem sarcastic and just annoy the bejeebers out of me.

This is my confession to you my brothers and sisters and I will try to do better.
