A christian friend of mine told me we are not suppose to call anyone father but our Father in heaven. This was in reference to us calling Pope John Paul the 2nd the Holy Father. What does this passage in the bible really referring to?

Here’s a really thorough answer:

catholic.com/library/Call_No_Man_Father.asp

Using common sense, does the Bible say I can’t call my male parent father?
Wow, this surprises me, since I have spoken with at least three Protestant ministers who wanted to be called Father.

So far the only other clergy of a major religion who doesn’t call their clergy Father are Rabbis.

I was taught: Catholics have Priests, Protestants have Ministers or Reverends; and Jews have Rabbis.

So when I use the title PRIEST or FATHER I automatically assume Catholic. I never call a Prostestant clergyman Father if I can help it.

Actually the Jews in this passage, (the Pharisees) were using the term Father to imply superiority, both humanly and spiritually. Christ was admonishing them, that no man is superior to any other.

Everybody calls the priest at our chrurch father. I don’t see anything wrong with it. Its just were addressing him. thats the way I see it. If we ain’t suppose to call him father what are we suppose to call him Reverend? Thats crazy.

From my research:

“Catholics calltheir spiritual leaders ‘Father’ following Paul’s example: 'I became your father in Jesus Christ through the Gospel…(1 Cor. 4:15).”

Also ‘Pope’ is from the Greek (papa) ‘father’.

I think we should all take a minute and take a good look at this link. It will clear up a lot of obvious misunderstandings about his question.

btw I can’t wait to use this argument on my Protestant, homeschool karate classmates/teachers. They all know I am some kind of Catholic but so far they have not been too inquisitive. They have “taught” us to call the class leaders Sensei (Teacher) and the head Sensei of the style we are learning is called “Master” . Oh and they have also “taught” us to bow upon entering and exiting the dojo (classroom) and made sure to explain to the beginners that “IT’S NOT IDOLATRY!!!” I really hope they try to convert me or get me “saved”.
Is it ok to be gleeful about wanting to share the truth of Sacramental, Liturgical, Historic, Christianity? I remember how I felt when my friend started me on the slippery slope to Catholicism when I had been a Baptist ever since nine months before I was born. teeheehee

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.
And y’all pray for me a sinner.
Peace
