I just watched The Scarlet and the Black, a movie based on the life of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, who saved over 6500 people from the Nazis in Rome during the war.
Apparently there has been no real memorial to him until recently, when the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society created one in his home town of Killarney. Here’s a photo.

They have created the Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award, and are soliciting nominations for the person or organisation that is doing outstanding humanitarian work and is most deserving of the 2016 award.
This is a pretty cool way to remember someone, and Fr. O’Flaherty’s story is inspiring.

Love that movie. Glad to know O’Flaherty is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

There’s a dramatization of O’Flaherty’s life called The Scarlet and the Black, with Gregory Peck.
 
I actually drew on the ending on The Scarlet and the Black a bit for the ending of my novel Rain from Heaven. I love the idea of the good guy visiting the bad guy in prison and helping him reform. 🙂
 
Only thing I didn’t like about that movie was they had the pope more concerned with the vatican treasures than peoples lives. IIRC the church spent millions of dollars in gold ransoming people. (Another item that didn’t come up in the movie was that Vatican city itself doubled in population during the war as it became a refuge for Jewish families.)

But did like the movie.
