Conquest was the way of obtaining land in the ancient times. God foreknew this from eternity. So, He promised the Israelites the Promised Land and victory over their enemies if they obeyed Him. Again, promises of victory was very normal back than. God would use His People’s victories to show the ancient world that He is the God of gods and to spread devotion to Himself throughout the land, since the conquest of one religious people over another meant the losers’ gods submitted to the victors’ gods in that time.

However, God also warned the Israelties that they would lose their land and be conquered by their enemies if they disobeyed Him. Of course, the Israelities disobeyed Him several times, and each time they did, their enemies took their land and slaughtered or enslaved them, and the devotion and religion of God would be replaced by devotion and religion to false gods. However, God’s People soon realized that, even in exile, the Lord was still with them, which was baffling because they assumed He had submitted to their enemies’ gods.
