When Governor Cuomo called the novel coronavirus the great equalizer this past spring I thought that statement was madness.

It affects poor people and the middle class greatly, but it can also affect the rich as much of their wealth consists of numbers in hard drives, and the value of those numbers can only be maintained if there is increasing economic activity, i.e., more goods and services produced and sold.

Finally, crises like pandemics will likely pale in comparison to combined effects of limits to growth and environmental damage coupled with climate change. When those take place in the long term, then those numbers in hard drives eventually become worthless.

Nationwide, African Americans, who make up 13 percent of the population, account for 21 percent of COVID-related deaths. The difference in hospitalization rates between groups is even more striking, with Native Americans at 300 per 100,000, African Americans at 267 and Latinos at 265, while its 57 for non-Latino whites.
