I subscribed to it years ago, so my (name removed by moderator)ut is only for historical purposes. It may or may not be the same.

For several years after Vatican II it was one of the rare Catholic voices proclaiming the threats to orthodoxy. On occasion, it would sit back and print a very detailed summary of some forgotten Catholic social thinker from several decades ago, whose ideas are still applicable today. This was something you could not find elsewhere.

Unfortunately it often adopted a shrill tone, sometimes attacking without justification. It became locked into a suspicion-towards-the-Magisterium mode. It was not as bad as the Remnant, which split off from them in an intra-family dispute among the publishing family.

I think every Catholic should subscribe to the Wanderer for 6 months, then cancel it. It gives a view which is useful for awhile, but dangerous over the long term. I gave it up because it raised my stress level, without giving me any information useful for my actions. In the long run, papers like this one, and much worse ones, tend to promote passivity. One looks forward to the next edition so one can be in the front row seat to the decline of the Catholic Church and Western Civilization. There is a kind of thrill to this, which is why disaster movies do well at the box office…among spectators.

I am not sure being seated is the most spiritually healthy position to be.

I wouldn’t wrap a dead fish in it.

I respect the fish too much.

You can check it out via their online version:

i subscribed to it for many years

the concept "of a “single spaced” newspaper passed me by once my eyes went bad

i am frankly shocked “the Wanderer” still exists

if you can read it it & have the the time for an “old-fashioned catholic newspaper”

go for it…

i am on that link & checking it out

thank you for the reccomendation

I skim the online versions of several Catholic publications almost daily:Register, Reporter, Crisis, Wanderer, etc. They range from far left (Reporter) to far right (Wanderer), and just like in politics I figure the truth is in the middle there somewhere.
I’m old enough to remember when the original German version of Der Wanderer was read in my family. It certainly has a venerable history, but read it with caution now IMHO.
I won’t even touch things like The Remnant. Scary.

I have to say this made me smile on a day I needed a smile. I have gotten a few free copies. I guess it might be of value for like-minded people, kind of like Rush Limbaugh. There certainly is some wisdom for having familiarity with the whole spectrum of the Church.

That is great advice and a great description of the danger. I think one problem with modern news is it can draw us to focus our attention on things we cannot change. I can’t change what the Vatican does. I probably can’t change what my diocese does. I might be able to have some influence in my parish. So why do people pay so much attention to the things they can’t change and far too little attention to what they can change?

Also, I noticed long before I became Catholic a tendency of many Catholics to think at any moment the Church will fail. Besides that indicating a lack of faith in the supernatural aspect of the Church and Christ’s promise it also displays a lack of perspective. The Church has a long history and there were difficulties far worse than we have today.

So true. Excessive focus on problems are sure to lead to the Chicken Little Effect. Still, it is good to know about this segment of the Church and their perception.

I used to read the Wanderer back around the time JP2 was elected. It was amusing to read the articles railing against modern biblical scholarship, telling you no Catholic could ever accept them. Printed alongside were the Pope’s Wednesday Audiences, where he openly talked about the Yahwist and Eloist accounts in Genesis, etc.

It was quite a lesson to learn. Sometimes the people who tell you what the Church teaches have no clue.

To be fair, the Wanderer DID print JP II teachings. Back then my diocesan paper was reprinting whatever the secular papers were printing, with a few religious phrases added. They wouldn’t print what JP II was teaching unless he happened to refer to something the daily paper was pushing that week.
