Greetings,

I am a big fan of Mel Gibson, primarily his movie “The Passion.” As a Paleo-Conservative minded guy, I’ve always prided myself on being “emotionally strong,” but this pattern ended after viewing “The Passion”: I actually cried.

But, to the main point: I watched Mel Gibson’s interview on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” where Gibson testified to how he was constantly harrassed and received death threats by people who hoped he would not complete his movie. Even his family members were harrassed. Yet in the face of all this, he still completed the movie, believing that Christ was on his side. Details of all the harrassment and death threats against him are at supportmelgibson.com/

Basically, I think everyone should go out and purchase his movie on DVD, the money will support him and future movies he plans to make in support of Christianity. He is the only one in Hollywood that actually portrays Christianity in a positive light, while mainstream Hollywood always bashes the religion (but of course, not any other religion  ).

God Bless

I have heard rumors that he has bought or is considering buying the rights from Icon films to do “Fatima”. Wouldn’t that be breathtaking? Mel actually met with Lucia before her death.

Since I have my computer repaired yesterday, I may be able to play DVD’s on it. If so, “The Passion of the Christ” will be one of the first DVDs I get, after I pay bills of course.

Thanks, I saw the movie in the theatre and it brought tears to my eyes. Very rarely do movies touch me like that.

I would love to see Mel Gibson’s “Fatima!”

I finally broke down and viewed The Passion of the Christ a few days ago - I had been afraid of the spectacle of the violence, even though I was very familiar with all the medical aspects of scourging and crucifixion. And in fact, the violence was nearly more than I could bear to look at and I took the movie very personally.

The part that affected me most deeply was not the violence, however - maybe because I knew the blood would be truly terrible - the part that pierced my heart is Peter’s face - displaying all of his horrified realization that he has just denied the Lord three times.

I became Peter in that moment - looking to the Mother - realizing that I am not worthy, wondering how she could ever forgive me and how could I ever forgive myself and running away in confusion. Peter’s denials saved his life. Mine were a matter of convenience and expedience and avoidance. I will never forget that scene.

And then Veronica, so close to providing the Lord a final succor in the form of a precious cup of water, kicked out of her hand in a shocking shower. I recalled the people arrested for symbolically trying to carry water to Terri Schindler, who seems to figure very strongly in my decision to convert, along with Fr. Pavone and the suffering and death of Pope John Paul II.

And Mary, keeping her terrible vigil, trying to comfort Mary Magdalen, wiping up the blood of the scourging at the pillar, pressing her face to the pavement above his underground cell, trying to offer some last comfort to her son as he fulfilled his destiny. “I am here.”

I couldn’t keep myself from touching her face on the screen.

Coincidentally, today I listened twice to Fr. Corapi’s inspiring and reassuring talk regarding the Mother and one of Mother Angelica’s talks about her, as well. In praying her rosary, tonight, I felt a special affinity for her with all of these new insights.

If Mel Gibson does “Fatima,” I will buy it right away. I’m very sorry that he has suffered persecution because of his movie.

Harassment and death threats?

Luke 21:12-19. He was harassed because of his service to our Lord.
I’m so glad he didn’t back down.

I watched the Passion once, then gave my copy to my sister in law as a gift. I plan to buy another copy for my own viewing.

And his crowning moment in glory was when the film racked up over half a billion dollars (and growing), and a huge turnout of movie goers, yet was ignored by every award show as if it never existed.

Ah1 there’s the rub. should a man make that kind of profit out of the Passion of Christ? Judas only made 30 piesces of silver.
I am not into “The Passion” film as the Bible does it better, but the swooning fans of Gibson should be aware that he has founded his own cult church, that he totally rejects Vatican 2, and his theology is to the right of Ghenghis Khan.

That was discussed a few weeks ago. He was on Hannity and states that the rumor was not true. I heard it for myself.

i heard an interview where he talks about it…it’s just mass without the changes of vatican II, like it’s all in latin.

anyway, i bought the passion as soon as it came out. i think mel gibson did a great job with it and all the actors were brilliant. did you know that the woman that played Mary is jewish? and the hand that holds the nail as Jesus is being crucified is mel gibson’s left hand?

I think what Mel Gibson did was beyond incredible!!! This man fought against everything to bring this movie to fruition and to bring man to his knees. I don’t care about how much money he made although I hear he plans to put it back into more movies of this type and I applaud him. Why is this movie important to me…because it takes me to a place I need to be. It takes me back to God and Jesus…me and so many others…hmmm…

wow. lot of bitterness in that post.

yes, i think a man SHOULD be rewarded for his work, when he pours himself so completely into obeying God. if you don’t know anything about the making of ‘the passion’, which it sound like you don’t, you should read up on it. he was brought to a place in his life where he didn’t want to live anymore. he considered suicide. but he felt like God gave him this prject to do - to put the passion of Christ on screen. i think he did a great job.

as far as his religious views - he’s traditionalist catholic - very ‘right’, yes. but comparing him to genghis kahn is, as i’m sure you’re aware, ridiculous.

he doesn’t PERSONALLY reject vatican II - his church does. i agree that rejecting vatican II is a mistake - but not one to crucify gibson over.

I agree Mel should be awarded for his work and has by the throngs of well wishers and the results of the viewing since it came out.

about the Oscars… and being snubbed… the Passion was ABOVE that spectacle. Mel’s award and reward will be great in heaven.

Mel talked about that on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He said he didn’t think it was right to campaign for an academy award with this type of film. He was very gracious about the academy ignoring his (to my mind) masterpiece of film making.

We all know the general climate in Hollywood is anti-Catholic, anti-anything that doesn’t allow them to live hedonistic lives filled with self-delusion. It came as no surprise to me that The Passion of the Christ was snubbed for Mel’s daring to tell the Gospel story of the Passion without sloppy sentimentality or any sort of compromise.

the soundtrack to the passion is amazing too…i was so surprised it didnt win best composer. i got it the day i saw the movie in the theater. i always have music on when i read (i read a lot of fantasy and listen to stuff like the LotR soundtracks) and i’ve used the passion soundtrack A LOT while i’m reading. every song on it is great.

I won’t address your bile or cutting remarks. That isn’t for me to comment upon. But, I will correct the idea that Mel Gibson went into this project thinking he’d make a pot of gold. Let me introduce you to a few facts:

Mel put all his own money and that of his struggling film company, Icon Films, into the project. He couldn’t get backing from any film company in Hollywood. Was he bitter about that? Not at all. He excused this by saying the execs of these companies simply couldn’t see the profit in a film about Christ when so many had already been made and it was going to be in foreign languages (with no subtitles at the time). It wouldn’t be the first time film execs have gotten things wrong, btw. The great films that couldn’t get backing or were made grudgingly are legend in Hollywood.

That the film made so much money was a huge surprise to everyone, including Mel Gibson. Even he didn’t realize the hunger of the viewing public for a film in which the Gospel message would be told as it happened, with no apologies or layers of saccharine sentimentality.

As for Mel’s personal beliefs and the way he leads his life, that is his business. It hardly has any bearing, for good or ill, on the fact that he made a masterpiece that touched the hearts of millions of people around the world. He certainly didn’t set out to make a sensational film of such magnitude. He simply wanted to tell this part of Christ’s story, which he felt was the epitome of Christ’s life and mission. That it became such a hit is due to the needs of the human heart and soul, not to any manipulation by Mel or anyone else.

Yes, he took it to Christian ministers to view, but not to make money but to let them see it so they would know whether or not they could recommend it to their people–as a gesture of good faith. They responded enthusiastically, as we all know, and the result is history. And that’s all there is to man’s part in this film. The Holy Spirit’s part was God’s business. It seems to me that God wanted to use this film to bring people to faith, and I for one can see nothing wrong with that.

And Million Dollar Baby got tons of awards! It was pro euthanasia and portrayed a Catholic priest/ the Church in a terrible light.

I saw clips of Million Dollar Baby last week, while a priest critiqued the way the Church was portrayed. He then contrasted the movie with JP II’s letter (written in 2003 I think) on how people in a persistent vegetative state should be treated. (of course, JP II made it clear he DID NOT like the term persistent vegetative state!!)

I’m not sure Hollywood is humble enough to give awards to the Passion. —KCT

i remember a great interview with mel gibson where they were talking about the jewish writer or reporter (i cant remember his name) that was printing a whole bunch of stuff about how bad the passion would be for jews and all that. the interviewer asked mel gibson what he wanted to say to that guy, and i’ll never forget what mel said. he looked right at the camera and said, “God bless you, ___”. that was great.
