Hi,

I was wondering which english translation would you best recommend? Thanks!

Actually, the one published by Paulist Press is quite excellent.

The Forward is written by an Orthodox scholar that shows rather conclusively who the mysterious “pilgrim” really was (an Orthodox priest who was moved from parish to parish in all the places mentioned in the book).

My favorite book

I love Helen Bacovcin’s translation which includes both “The Way…” and The Pilgrim Continues His Way.

(My favorite book, too)

This is a truly excellent translation as well. It is just that Paulist Press does a great job with the Forward and the Introduction. In addition, Paulist Press’ translation is actually an older version of the Way of the Pilgrim where we see the fuller form of the Jesus Prayer used by the Eastern Church today.

The one used by Bacovcin is a version that follows the Greek version of the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me.” That is, of course, fine as well.

Thanks. I ended up getting the Olga Savin version since it was the only one in stock at the bookstore at the time. I read it and Loved it! Probably one of my favorite books now.

How do the main English translations differ (Savin, French, Paulist Fathers, Bacovcin) from one another?
