Theologians, Bible Scholars, and the NAB

Actually, the Vatican commissioned it. They wanted a bible that could be used for the liturgy, for study, and for spiritual edification. They are now going to re-fix it again. It’s a great idea (the one all-purpose bible idea) But they ran into trouble trying to make it a little too “scholarly”, maybe?

The major problem with the NAB is not being to scholarly but too politically correct. People with agendas make lousy translators.
 
There’s nothing un-Catholic or un-orthodox about preferring one Bible translation to another. The Church may choose one for liturgical use and it will be used, but this does NOT require that anyone thinks that is the best translation, period. It’s more likely to be the most accessible one. But it’s not at article of faith that the NAB is above criticism.

The NAB translation seems not to attribute that wind to the Holy Spirit. But in the notes it says “…literally, the wind of God or the spirit of God”

Why, NAB, why?? 😦

Yeah it is, but I’d like to say something I thought of recently while praying the Rosary. There’s an interesting connection there with the third glorious mystery, the descent of the Holy Spirit.

2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (Acts (RSV) 2)

But, the weird thing is the wording matches the RSV. Anyway, it made me think how the Holy Spirit through the Church is carrying on a new Genesis by bringing us out of the darkness and chaos.

An accessible translation is good IMO. A lot of folks struggle even with those. Some of us need all the help we can get. 🙂
I don’t think the NAB, or any other translation is above criticism, just look at my original post. I just think it would be better, or maybe more useful, if some of the criticisms had some references to experts to back them up. So far there hasn’t been a lot offered in this thread.
