Is there any theological explanation for stigmata in christian mysticism? When did appear the view explaining Paul’s mentioned “stigmas” or “signs” are talking about the supernatural phenomenas, not literal martyr sufferings from being beaten up or something?

Some people consider them a superlative example of “making up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ” – certain chosen souls exemplify the Passion in this startling and arresting way. Some, like Marthe Robin in 20th century France, would actually undergo the Passion every Thursday-Friday. It’s not surprising stigmatists would be found especially in a materialistic age and in an age when love has grown cold, when so many have become indifferent to the sufferings of Christ and to the physical effects of sin.

Well. this is pure sect-like acting or cult. This thing is called GNOSTICISM. There’s no lack in Christ’s sufferings, He did the job perfectly, otherwise people should throw away the New Testament letters. Son of God completely finished the job and pleased God on humanities behalf, as well He pleased humanity on the God’s behalf. Those freaks, who just imitate sufferings or want themselves to get nailed to the Cross have nothing to do with church mystics, ecstatics, who had stigmas. The best examples are - Francis of Assisi and Padre Pio. They have the best documented and proven cases. But the thing is… People quoted Apostle Paul speaking about “stigmas”. It’s not the question of lacking something, Paul was always reffering to self-identification with Christ, for He has identified Himself with us. I’m just interested, where that view is coming from that Paul was talking about certain mystical experiences like stigma? For I know that Eastern Ortodox Church believes differently. Though many priests there believe in the miracles of Francis of Assisi or even Padre Pio.
