What can a married woman in her 50’s do with a degree in Theology?

I’m thinking ahead to the “when I grow up” part of my life. (Read that, when my children have grown and left the nest… I’ll be ready for a new chapter of my life and am thinking seriously about going back to school.) What else is there besides becoming a parish DRE?

Teach in parochial school. Become a lecturer? Write a book.

One parish in my city has a Pastoral Assoc. who is a woman in her 50’s. She has a degree in theology, but I can’t say it’s a theology that is orthodox. She teaches we can call God “mother”, and stuff like that.

I would think being involved in a Faith Formaion program would be great, or how about starting an Adult FF program??

I got my first theology degree at the age of 44. In that time I have been a director of spirituality in a parish, Stewardship coordinator, RCIA coordinator, Adult Faith Formation Director and Liturgy Director. Presently I am a Pastoral Associate which sort of includes all of the above. I also teach in our diocesan lay formation program, have worked in deacon formation, and on the diocesan liturgy commission and RCIA committee, and am on the lecture circut in our diocese. I am presently 54…so there is lots you can do. Best of luck to you…I LOVE what I do. My kids are all in their 20’s now but I started back to school when they were young…one night a week. I started working full time when the youngest was in HS and still was able to be home when she was home most of the time.

My husband is always telling me I should write. Maybe he’s on to something? And my years of parenting are giving me practical lecture experience. (Oh, wait… I bet you mean a different type of lecturing? 😉 )

Ugh. Sounds like my husband’s RCIA director. She had us outside praying to the four cardinal directions during one class. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

No, I am waaaaay more in line than that, I promise.

I like your idea of adult faith formation. It’s one of my big laments since reverting - adult education in the church is the pits in many areas.

Wow! Go You! 👍

My kids are 13, 8, 3 and 1. We homeschool and I keep the books for our business. I don’t think I could swing continuing college for me right now - simply not enough energy or bra(name removed by moderator)ower. But someday… someday I might be able to do it. I love our faith so much. I love teaching. I love learning. It seems reasonable to think that the Lord may just be preparing me for another work when my current work is done. 🙂
