Theology for Beginners

I am over half-way through Theology for Beginners by Frank Sheed. This book has strengthened my faith. Does anyone have a suggestion for a book along the same topic at the same level or maybe a step higher?

If you can find it, Walter Farrell’s A Companion to the Summa is a more in-depth look at theology, following along the lines of the Summa Theologica. There is an online version at:

I own, but haven’t read Aquinas Shorter Summa by Sophia Institute Press and Discovering Aquinas by Adian Nichols yet.

Frank Sheed wrote a second book, Theology and Sanity, which sounds like it is exactly what you are looking for. Karl Keating claimed it had the best explanation of the Trinity he had ever seen, and I responded similarly.

You could also give St. Augustine’s Confessions a shot. I recommend the one translated by John K. Ryan.

I’m reading this one for my Medieval history class and I’ve found it to be an astonishing work. To think that a man can describe his life in such a way is, not only shocking, but a remarkable work in a time when the Roman Empire was in decline.

Thanks! I have St. Augustine’s Confessions, but I have not read it yet. I’ll buy Frank Sheed’s Theology and Sanity too. I am a book hoarder. I own over 100 books on Catholicism and Theology and this book, Theology for Beginners, will be the first book that I have read from cover to cover. Even though I posted this, I will probably read Mass Revision and then finish Jesus of Nazareth Vol 1 before going to Vol 2.
