…that one can delay…even indefinitely…pregnancy…for four reasons…which is included in the Cathecism…I caught a piece of Theology of the Body tonight on EWTN, and the priest hosting the show was talking about how Pope Pious? (can’t fully recall)…said that there were four permissable reasons for ‘spreading out’ the number of children we have…even if we choose to never have children again. One of the reasons was for financial reasons…

ok…so here’s my question…is the couple to be celibate during this timeframe of ‘delaying?’
I always felt like having my two children…was somehow going against the Catholic ‘way,’ but after viewing that tonight, I feel differently. Not better or anything…but feel like I had a ‘right’ to have two children, if this is what my husband and I talked about, and felt was feasible in our lives.

I thought this was really interesting…any thoughts??

Do you have the 4 reasons from the CCC?
LOL I only have two…sorry! I walked out of the room on the last two…ugh…but the two I can recall are…
  1. economic reasons
  2. emotional reasons
ugh…we could google it under Pope Pious?:o

I went to ewtn’s site, Damascus…and it has tonight’s show posted, but not the script…I will try to find out…!

whatevergirl: I would say you have to decide whether its okay on your own. But yes, the Church does allow us to delay or cease to have children for “Grave Motives”. This doesn’t mean just because you always wanted 2, or so that you would have enough money to live in the best neighborhoods. But if you feel you had a Grave reason to stop having children, then you are perfectly within Catholic moral teaching to do so. And you don’t have to abstain. NFP is more reliable than modern chemical methods of birth control when used properly.

Check out this link for more information on the Church’s position on this subject.

yes…yes…he said grave reasons, i didn’t mean to imply that it’s just a whimsical thing…sorry! LOL:o

Thank you for your post…it is helpful.

Very interesting. That is kind of how I understand now. You can choose to avoid kids naturally, but you have to have a really good reason.

Nevertheless, this whole point was a real gotcha to me, and I bet to a lot of Catholics when they hear it. It may not be easy, but we can handle the teaching that we cannot have relations that aren’t naturally open to kids. On top of that, though, comes the implicit teaching that we *have *to have relations and kids (grave reasons aside). I never knew that getting married meant I had to have kids and that it would be wrong even to avoid relations to avoid a pregrancy. I am sure glad I wanted kids, because if I didn’t I would really feel some vital teaching had been kept from me.
