I have tried doing a search for previous threads, but have not found anything.

My question: can anyone tell me where (which audience) Pope John Paul II applies his theology of the body to the question of a male-only priesthood? Does he?

I am in a “dialogue” 🙂 with a Catholic who dissents from the Church’s (pretty clear) teaching that ordination is to be reserved to men. I know all of the pertinent documents and reasoning. When I mentioned the theology of the body (priest = icon of Christ, etc.) he said that the theology of the body could actually provide arguments in FAVOR of women’s ordination. Now, since JP II wrote the theology of the body and ordinatio sacerdotalis, this must be a minsinterpretation of the theology of the body.

Also, does anyone know of any other (on-line) arguments applying theology of the body to the question of male-only priesthood.
Cheers!

In theory…the most cogent argument one could come up with from t.o.b. regarding a gender-inclusive priesthood would be that JPII in T.O.B. argued vehemently for the need for two genders each with specific roles that represent the Body of Christ, etc.

So…it’s not a huge leap to say…“if the church needs both of these roles to be complete…why doesn’t the priesthood?”.

Again…that’s about all you could come up with from T.O.B…it’s not a far fetched argument…but I think arguments about the translation of “in persona christi” are more through provoking.

I am sorry I cannot be of much help. Interesting I live 30 miles from you! I am doing a book study with a parishoner/friend of mine and we are reading JPIIs theology of the body right now…I will keep an eye out for the topic.

This is actually quite simple and was covered in detail by my book, The Authentic Catholic Woman. The TOB shows us that there is a nuptial backdrop to the universe and that life is created spiritually and physically when the bride and bridegroom unite in a complete gift of self. Thus, the priest (bridegroom, an icon of The Bridegroom) is espoused to Holy Mother Church (the Spotless Bride), offering the semina (word of God) in order that she nourish her children. If there is a woman priest, there will be a same-sex union, which will be sterile. Them’s the facts.

WOW! You just illuminated some of the “stuff” out of theology of the body for me. I wish JPII would have said it that plainly. TOB can get murkey.

GSK It is pretty neat that you post here on this forum. Its like…cool… a sorta famous person is posting here.

I visited a website that featured your “work”. feminine-genius.com/

Thank you Lord for giving us GSK:gopray2:  :dancing:

Me’s likes them’s facts. Thanks–that was a very concise and precise explanation. I will have to look for your book. I feel as though the Church’s beautiful teaching about the feminine genius does not get a fair hearing among the masses.
