I wasn’t sure where else to post this. At a Young Adult retreat recently, the Priest was telling us the story of how Pope John Paul II released his Theology of the Body through his weekly addresses. If I remember right he said the reason for this had something to do with the Pope not being able to publish it once he became Pope for some reason. I’m not sure if I heard this correctly.

Can anyone verify this? Or do you know the correct reason why he released the information in his weekly addresses instead of publishing it himself?

Thanks!

The Pope never set out to write a “Theology of the Body” text. As he was developing the themes of the theology, he would present during his weekly address his latest discoveries and meditations in the form of an essay. These essays were later compiled into the book “The Pope’s Theology of the Body” . It has nothing to do with rules or regulations, and obviously, the Pope has published numerous books since his installment.

Yes, the Theology of the Body is a compilation of his weekly talks.
You might appreciate the commentary on The Theology of the Body Explained by Christopher West and published by Pauline Books

It is a wonderful resource on this topic that our Pope has taught so eloquently.

For those that are beginers you might want to try “the good news about sex and marriage” also by Christopher West. It is in question and answer format so it is easy to use as a resource and is written for the average layperson to understand.
