I have heard of many incidents of ghosts appearing to someone, and then that person discovers that the person has died.
I believe it’s possible that these are angels who have been sent to the human to increase their faith and comfort them. These appearances are usually not frightening, but comforting and faith-building.
I’ve read accounts of soldiers and sailors appearing to their parents, and then the next day, the parents get the missal that their child has been killed in action. This type of thing seems to happen in the military, and also with firefighters and police. Perhaps families of those who give their lives for others are sometimes given that “last look” as a gift from God.
This is all very Biblical. Angels can appear in various forms (remember “entertain strangers, for some have entertained angels unaware.” Hebrews 13:2). Also, the entire book of Tobit is about the angel Raphael who appears as a man.
My husband had an amazing, very life-like dream before his grandma died. He dreamed that he saw my mother (who died several years ago), and she was in church, with no pain or crooked body, and she said she was very happy. He didn’t understand the dream at the time–why would MY mother appear to him? But later, after his grandma died, he realized that my mother was reassuring him that his grandma would like heaven. It was very comforting to him and to other relatives who heard about it.
People say that ghosts don’t carry on conversations. I’m not so sure about this. There have been incidents where ghosts appeared and kept up long conversations, then disappeared, and later, it was learned that the conversant was dead.
I see no reason why God couldn’t send an angel to convey confort, or possibly to jar someone into an awareness that the spiritual realms is real and that they’d better pay attention to their soul and its eternal destiny before it’s too late.
I’m not sure about the poltergiest phenomena. These are very destructive and disruptive manifestations, and I tend to think that they have a demonic origin. However, I think it is also possible that some of them are a natural phenomena that we don’t understand. We’ve all heard stories of the power of the hormone adrenalin; e.g.,a petite young mom lifts a huge SUV off her trapped child, or an old person beats off a mugger. I think it’s possible that some hormonal or other physiological event is occuring in some incidents of poltergeist phenomena.
It’s not likely to be researched, because rightfully so, most research grants will go to scientists trying to find cures for diseases, or other useful projects. Unless we can forge a link between poltergeists and disease cures, or energy supplies, it’s not likely that they’ll be studied by scientists.
My daughter’s fiance is currently experiencing ghostly visitations. He lives in a typical singles apartment complex in a typical one-bedroom apartment. Several times, he has seen a little boy. My daughter was watching a movie at his place one night, and her fiance went to bed. She heard a conversation behind her, and wondered who her fiance was talking to. He wasn’t–he was sound asleep. She’s also sensed someone walking with her when she leaves the building. And most alarming of all, the young man had his 14-year old “little brother” (the charitable organization, not a real flesh and blood little brother) spend a weekend with him. He told the little brother NOTHING about the manifestations. But the little brother asked him, “Who is that little boy that comes into your apartment?”

Not sure what will come of all this. I’m urging him to move out. Why take a chance on a demonic origin? He and my daughter find the manifestations frightening, not comforting. I pray for them, that the Lord will protect them.
