Just saw the word “theonomy” for the first time. I was reading the Wikipedia page about “The Handmaid’s Tale,” because I wanted to know what it was about.

Can someone explain the difference between theonomy and theocracy, in a simple, easily understandable fashion for someone who doesn’t have patience to delve into philosophy?

What I understand so far is that a theonomy establishes a rule of law by divine law. (Would Sharia be a type of theonomy?) The definition of theocracy that I read stated that theocracy is government by (or through) God.

What’s the diff?

Theocracy is like when priests ruled in the name of God (as in the OT) think Moses.

Theonomists hold that God’s Law-Word, including the judicial laws of the Old Testament, should be observed by modern societies.
